Dan helped evolve a team of Systems Administrators and Architects (of which I was a member) to a new level. We managed Microsoft Server based core platforms and services (Active Directory, PKI, SCCM, Radius, DSC, etc.). He transitioned us from platform owners to a service-based team, led us to architect our enterprise public cloud, and positioned us as the group to go to for consultation on any project. Also, Dan helped us transition to Open Source and to cloud native services for cost savings, and to ‘infrastructure as code’ (Terraform and Ansible). Dan is a “Manager Engineer”. In terms of engineering, Dan rolls up his sleeves and influences the technical direction of our team as much as our Senior Engineers themselves. He maintained our HAProxy servers, built monitoring and alerting, and joined the team in troubleshooting as needed. Dan previously worked in an SRE type role for production platforms and he programs in Python and Bash,and is fluent in Datadog and very well versed in ELK stack. In terms of management, Dan knows about Agile practices, business processes, and organizational leadership and change. Much of Dan’s work outside of managing our team involved road mapping with the infrastructure and support services teams, managing licensing, contracts (negotiation and management), and influencing the direction and evolution of core enterprise/corporate services (including onboarding a massive VDI offering). I can't recommend him enough. His contribution and influence on our org will likely resonate for years.
