I have been a social worker and educator in the fields of heath care and aging in Chicago since 1973. Since 1987, I have focused exclusively on dementia care issues in a wide range of settings, from out-patient clinic to hospice and home care. In recent years, I have initiated and led grant projects aimed at improving the care of people with advanced dementia living in Chicago area through education, training, consultation, and evaluation.I have given thousands of presentations to professional and family caregivers throughout the U.S., Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea. I have published more than 50 publications including journal articles, book chapters, training manuals,and three editions of the book, Alzheimer's Early Stages: First Steps for Family, Friends and Caregivers (2013, 2003, & 1999) as well as The Art of Dementia Care (2007). I also helped produce several educational videos and web-based programs. I am on the board of TimeSlips and the editorial board of The American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. I am past board member of the American Society on Aging and in 2009, I received ASA's Mental Health & Aging Award. In 2014, I was awarded Advocate of the Year by the Illinois Association for Music Therapy. In 2015, I received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois Chapter of the National Assn. of Social Workers. I have had a rewarding career and remain passionate about creating a better world for people with dementia. I now do CE programs and staff training with direct caregivers for All Trust Home Care, a home care company specializing in the care of people with dementia and their families.Specialties: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, family caregiving, end-of-life care, training & education, writing, grants, consulting, and public speaking.
