I never thought I’d call myself a marketer. I always pictured being an artist or an academic (in many ways, in fact, I still do). Turns out the combination of those two identities is exactly what has fueled my success in brand marketing. It just took some time for me to realize that great digital marketing is art, driven by science.I’ve been writing professionally for 15 years. I got started covering outdoors and adventure topics for a local mountain life blog while I was in grad school. Fast forward to 2024, and I’ve written for Yahoo!, Zapier, The Motley Fool, Databox, Close CRM, and dozens of other clients. And my work has been discussed or mentioned in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, The Guardian, and other high-profile publications. Blog content, website copy, research reports, ad copy, SEO briefs, you name it — I’ve written just about everything at one time or another. It’s not just a decade and a half of practicing the art of writing that got those results, though. It’s the combination of writing talent and a deep understanding of the psychology of attention and decision-making. That’s been the key factor in developing my storytelling skill into success in digital marketing. And with my postgraduate-level education in psychology came a deep understanding of experimentation. When I led the research content team at The Motley Fool, a respected financial media brand, I was constantly experimenting. Article topics, word counts, titles, metadata, keywords, promotional strategies, and writing styles were all fair game for testing.Did it always work? Of course not. But with an organized, empirical approach driven by analytics and KPIs, every experiment could be measured and tracked. And that’s how I built an entirely new function and team within the company. A team that was recognized and praised by members of the leadership team almost immediately.Told you: still an artist and an academic at heart.I’m always looking to connect with people who really love to dig into the psychology behind effective marketing. If growth marketing, metrics, experiments, and great copy are your jam, let’s connect! And if you’re thinking about taking your company’s marketing game to the next level, be sure to reach out. I’m always interested in hearing about new opportunities.
