    As a Respiratory Scientist I work directly with patients to deliver diagnostic tests of breathing and treatment of patients with lung disorders, such as asthma, COPD, Interstitial lung disease and cystic fibrosis. I am also involved with assessing patient’s fitness for surgery and other treatments. In my role, I see patients from other specialities like cardiology, thoracic surgery and clinical oncology.As a Respiratory Scientist I use different techniques and equipment to investigate respiratory problems and to perform a variety of routine and highly complex diagnostic tests, assessing all aspects of lung functions.Measurements include:- Spirometry- Lung volumes- Respiratory gas exchange- Cardiopulmonary exercise testing- Bronchial provocation (Mannitol challenge)- Allergy testing- Blood gases- Overnight oximetry- Hypoxic altitude simulation testing- Respiratory muscle strength testing- Six minute walk test (with and without oxygen)- Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing- Response to treatmentThese test results help with the diagnosis of lung disease to identify treatment regimes, measure the effects of treatment and estimate likely risks during surgery.
