Manager Of Engineering
I was responsible for all engineering functions within the company - from "cradle to grave". I led an in-house department of 4 employees as well as various outside contractors as necessary. In addition to my personnel and project management duties, I was very active in the actual engineering of our products. My engineering duties included: design conceptualization, electrical circuit board design using Altium, electrical harness and cable design using multiple tools, mechanical design using SolidWorks, embedded programming for Freescale Kinetis processors, Android Application development, performing safety and EMC pre-compliance testing in preparation for agency certifications, writing product and service manuals and other documentation, training dealers, manufacturing/process engineering, and support engineering.During my time with Gammill, I led the development and launch of the Vision 2.0 product as well as the development of a completely new product line - the QNX. During this time, I secured 3 patents, with more in pending status.Gammill is the industry leading manufacturer of long-arm quilting machines. In addition, their Statler brand is the leader in computer guided quilting machines.
Electrical Engineer
I was responsible for all electrical engineering activities within the company, reporting directly to the General Manager. My duties included improving circuit board and cabling designs for improved reliability as well as Android applications development.During this time, I instituted multiple product improvements, and completed the development of the Charm product and its launch to market. I also began to oversee the development of the Vision 2.0 product.
Manufacturing Engineering Manager
I was the manager for manufacturing engineering at the plant. I was responsible for all process and manufacturing engineering, EHS activities, CNC programming, and facility and equipment maintenance. In all, I had 19 people working for me. In addition, I was in charge of all capital acquisitions for the plant (maintained the yearly plant capital budgets) as well as managing the plant Variable-Cost Productivity (VCP) improvement projects budget. My group was responsible for the acquisition, installation, setup, and maintenance of all plant capital equipment. In all, we managed over 600 major pieces of equipment, including: specialized coil winding, forming and lacing equipment; CNC mills and lathes; center-less grinders; robotic welders; hydraulic and stamping presses; a varnish dip, monorail, and oven system; a powder paint system with manual and auto booths, a 5-stage wash and associated oven and monorail; and a zinc phosphate system.I led the EHS team to improve our plant safety record as well as reduce our electrical expenditures by hundreds of thousands of dollars in addition to other EHS benefits during this time.Lean Six Sigma was a big part of our daily lives, and through this effort, I led two Green Belt projects to completion, assisted on countless others, as well as served as the plant Lean coordinator for nearly a year. During this time I managing all plant Lean activities and realized savings in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and greatly improved overall productivity. The WP plant makes 48 and 56 frame induction motors under the Marathon, Leeson , Lincoln, and Fasco brand names as well as various OEM brand names.
Sr Process Engineer
I was hired as the Process Engineer over the Final Assembly department. Over time, I also became the engineer for the winding, leads, stationary switch, and nameplate areas of the plant. I was responsible for all the capital equipment in my departments and as they aged and needed replaced (or what was needed to implement process improvements), I researched new equipment, submitted proposals, and when approved, purchased and installed the equipment into the plant. In addition, I designed any fixtures, gauges, etc. that would be needed and oversaw their production either in our in-house tool room or through outside contractors. In addition to purchasing equipment, I designed four specialized machines - a vertical milling machine of sorts; an infrared oven system with palletized conveyor; an automatic motor assembly machine; and a motor tester. For all four machines, I performed all the mechanical design in SolidWorks as well as all the pneumatic and electrical designs. I built three of them personally in-house and had the assembly machine built by an outside contractor. As part of a major Lean improvement project for the plant, I developed a machine monitoring system that is currently monitoring the status and statistics for over 100 pieces of production equipment in real-time as well as recording the information for historical analysis. This system utilized Rockwell Automation RSView32, MicroLogix PLCs as well as other items (all programmed by me) to provide operational availability (OA), mean-time between failure (MTBF), mean-time between repair (MTBR) and other statistics for these machines in real-time. This allowed us to identify process and equipment issues before they would have been known any other way.In addition, I've been the engineer in charge of product transfers between plants (mainly to Mexico) as well as the "launch engineer" for new products coming into the West Plains plant, bringing in two new products.
Product Support Engineer Iii
As Product Support Engineer, I was the factory contact for our on-site Field Service Engineers as well as customer representatives to contact with regard to issues they could not solve. If a problem went 72 hours without resolution, myself or one of the other PSEs would fly to the customer site to fix the issue personally. At the factory, we were frequently in the lab, "breaking things" to try and reproduce what was being reported by the field, and generally trying to find weaknesses in our products. In addition to my support duties, I was worked closely with R&D on new product development acted as the voice of the customer/field to ensure our products were serviceable and as reliable as possible. As new products were launched, I would go to the initial customer sites to install the equipment and train our on-site field-service engineers and customers. I performed installations and training at multiple US sites and in Japan. The Rockville facility of Axcelis built photostabilizers and ashers. Our systems processed up to 300mm semiconductor wafers, and utilized multiple technologies including: multi-axis robotics; high power lighting (up to 36kW); microwave systems and the associated RF power supplies; vacuum systems including load locks, pumps, throttle valves and manometers; gas flow systems including mass flow controllers; plasma physics
