While finishing my degree from Stark State, I began working for a consulting engineer as a survey helper/CAD draftsman. I worked in various environments ranging from hazardous waste clean-up to pre-construction subsurface investigation. I also routinely performed material testing duties including, but not limited to, soil compaction, concrete and asphalt testing, bridge deck inspection and sounding, and the associated drafting. After 4.5 years, the firm restructured their focus, downsized, and I ultimately left the industry. For the next 2 years, I was a driver for a machine shop. I would occasionally help with simple production parts. I assisted with the build and installation of a central cooling system for the machines in the lathe room. June1, 1998 I began my career with The Beaver Excavating Company. I worked the first summer with a seasoned Professional Surveyor and gained valuable experience about construction layout. The time spent in the field provided me knowledge and experience that allowed me to better perform the takeoff duties I was initially hired to perform. I very much feel that first season prepared and "Paved the Way" for the understanding I have of the construction practices we perform daily. Clearly, I've experienced an evolution in the construction industry over the past 2-plus decades. Beaver, among the largest earthwork contractors in the game, was already using 3D modeling software for takeoff purposes. It was a natural progression to advance our use of 3D models once GPS Machine Control became a reality. Beaver was an early adopter of this technology, and today is among the largest users of GPS in our state and region of the country. In keeping up with this rapidly evolving industry, I continue to hone my skills in multiple software platforms to accomplish the seemingly endless one-of-a-kind projects that test the limits of the current techniques and capabilities of both man and machine. From strip malls to slip repair; from reservoirs to residential development; from turning lanes to divided highways, I have performed detailed takeoff and provided machine control files for any, and all, aspects of the project.
