Having moved on from the Graduate scheme within Ricardo A&I, I took on the role of the design engineer for our MTC site's Test & Development team. The role involves the design and integration of both Ricardo's own and various OEM driveline technologies onto our dynamometers and functional test rigs. A two year graduate scheme that consists generally of four 6-month stints in different divisions of the automotive sector for Ricardo PLC. However, my role lead me into a more "Development Engineer" basis, spending 21 months as a Test Engineer; designing, managing, generating, and conducting testing of transmission systems and EDUs (System and transmission level).Moving onto DTS Design for a few months, furthering my skills around Transmission Design, and developing my CAD software skills (Primarily CATIA V5). It's a great exposure to more of what Ricardo can do.

The main duties of this experience are to be able to construct and help create something out of nothing. Be it something as simple as a shelf, all the way up to constructing stud walls, fitting floor joists and then assembling a roof, during a renovation or a new build. Just from both standing back and listening, to getting the first-hand experience being in a real working environment is the greatest way to learn all aspects of how it really is. Furthermore, whilst working on a building site it means although having the laidback working environment, everyone involved in the team must be alert for all and any health and safety eventualities for both one another and all those near the site. Having experienced this type of work, I feel I’ve become much more conscious of others and gained a high level of maturity when faced with serious situations.

During my time off, across the second & third years of my undergraduate course, I spent time back at my previous place of education to help build and race the college's cars. The cars weren't heavily modified with respect to their 'PU' but did require a full strip and MOT style investigation to ensure the vehicle would be race-worthy. However, I feel that the most important work was learning how to introduce all the safety devices, alike; 5/6 point harnesses, multipoint roll cages, fire extinguisher system, electrical cut and fuel shut off valves. During these builds I learnt a lot about making important modifications to re-routing of electrical looms, welding for additional safety/fixing points, along with general procedures or pre-race checks and fixes.
