About Danny M. Leung
I am a postdoctoral researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). I specialise in process-based modeling with the Community Earth System Model (CESM), and statistical/empirical modeling of the earth and climate systems. I have a PhD degree focusing on aerosol modeling, dust cycle dynamics, atmospheric chemistry, and land-atmosphere interactions at the University of California–Los Angeles (UCLA). I have a demonstrated history of teaching as a TA at multiple universities and received exemplary teaching awards from schools both in the U.S. and Asia. I am also skilled in piano (classical and contemporary music) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and keen on learning languages and cooking.

Advanced Study Program (Asp) Postdoctoral Fellow
Current
Graduate Advisor
Current- Advise a graduate student on a research project about PM2.5-meteorology interactions and air pollution in East Asia.
Aos Graduate Advising Committee (Gac) Member
- Develop the AOS graduate program courses and curriculum with AOS professors and students through weekly meetings.- Process students' feedbacks for the AOS graduate program.
Graduate Teaching Associate
- Taught Climate Change and Climate Modeling (AOS 102).- Taught Numerical Modeling in AOS (AOS 180).- Got promoted as a teaching associate (Code 1506).
Atmospheric And Oceanic Sciences (Aeolian Processes & Atmospheric Chemistry) Phd Candidate
- Develop a new process-based dust emission scheme that incorporates more land-surface (aeolian) processes for dust cycle simulations in global climate models (GCM). Develop an empirical emulator using machine learning (XGBoost) to capture atmospheric transport and deposition processes of dust cycle. - Participate in the Community Earth System Model (CESM1 & CESM2) development.
Jifresse Graduate Researcher
- Worked for UCLA Joint Institute for Regional and Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) as a graduate researcher. Using state-of-the-art chemical transport model simulations (WRF–CMAQ) with in-situ measurements, I investigated the reasons for slower-than-expected PM2.5 air pollution amelioration in China despite its strong anthropogenic emissions reductions rate.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
- TA-ed Air Pollution (AOS 2) twice in Winter 2019 and Spring 2019.- TA-ed Atmospheric Dynamics (AOS 101) in Fall 2019.- Award the Morris Neiburger Award in Fall 2019 for having received outstanding teaching evaluations.
