Senior Research Project: Rehabilitative Arm Assist Device

Rehabilitative Arm Assist Device (RAAD)The RAAD is a robotic arm assist device for Patients suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The intent of the design is to decrease the rate of muscular degeneration by allowing full range of motion and exercise to muscles that would otherwise be dormant. The RAAD is equipped with a touch sensor feedback control system whose placement detects shoulder and elbow motion. Elbow and shoulder articulation is assisted via PWM driven Motors using an Arduino Microcontroller.• Worked with a team of engineers to design an exoskeleton that will provide rehabilitation by facilitating exercise and minimizing muscle deterioration for people suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy.• Responsible for designing the electro-mechanical control system for the Rehabilitative Arm Assist Device• Implemented the use of Force sensor, Analog and Digital circuits, and a microcontroller-motor controller interface to design a motor control system to assist in elbow and shoulder articulation.• Successfully integrated software based components with electro-mechanical control system in preparation for the project’s testing phase.• Ensured test subject safety by use of sensors and position servo potentiometer encoding system. Control system prevented injury by closely monitoring Arm articulation and preventing the device from exceeding human range of motion.• Used Gant charts and conducted weekly meetings with team members to meet target dates.• Project was submitted to Institutional Review Board and Approved for human testing.• Project was presented in Technical Paper and Poster Competitions at NEBEC (North East Bioengineering Conference) 2012 and SHPE 2013 Annual Conference.
