    Principal Investigator (1K08DA021570)Providing Depression Care for Older Adult Substance Abusers at Community AgenciesRecent analysis of data from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse indicates that the estimated number of people age 50 or older in need of substance abuse treatment is expected to increase from 1.7 million in 2000/2001 to 4.4 million in 2020. Depressive disorders among opiate abusers have detrimental effects on their well-being and ability to refrain from illegal drug use. Understanding the relationship between substance abuse and psychiatric disorders is critical to providing appropriate services to a growing and aging addicted population in the United States. The purpose of this study is to assess the appropriateness of Problem Solving Therapy (PST), an empirically tested cognitive based therapy for older adults in treating late life depression, as a therapeutic intervention for older individuals with substance abuse disorders. The proposed study will take place at a methadone clinic that serves a diverse clientele--a third are over the age of 50, nearly half (44%) of whom are African-American. A randomized clinical trial comparing 40 participants receiving the PST intervention to 40 participants receiving treatment as usual (TAU) will be conducted.

    Principal InvestigatorUsing the Chronic Care Model to Develop Treatment Approaches for Depression Among Older Adult Clients at a Methadone ClinicThe purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of a Chronic Care Model for understanding the needs of aging methadone clients who are depressed and the ability and/or preparedness of a methadone clinic to meet the needs of this population. The study seeks to investigate the perspectives of both methadone clinic staff, clinicians in late-life depression care, and older adult (over the age of 55) opiate addicts in order to propose a Chronic Care Model that is proactive in addressing the issue of depression among older adult methadone clients.
