This is the first time I've done the math, but it turns out I've spent a little under half of my life doing design. Most of this time has been spent creating websites, and with a bachelor of industrial design it’s hard not to approach it with a holistic outlook. Aesthetics are of course a vital baseline quality to any design but I’m obsessively interested in how designs work, how users will interpret them, if they’re doing all the things they should (and what else they *could* be doing), and how they are made. I’m not going to pretend to be able to write production level code, but I've spent a fair chunk of time understanding how that all works too.I identify goals and requirements, research, sketch, talk, collaborate, stare at my notebook with a furrowed brow, ask for feedback, manipulate pixels, ask more questions, watch users go through tasks on a prototype and take notes until my fingers hurt, debrief, repeat. Not always in that order. It’s all design. I sometimes do style guides too. I've been lucky enough to work with a wide variety of clients including Foxtel, Mirvac, Telstra, Westpac, St.George, Sydney Opera House, BigPond, Asthma Australia and Rams. Projects have varied from blue sky sketching workshops through to documented enterprise level site redesign.I like to start most days with a quick visit to design forums, I attend conferences regularly as well as get togethers for people who work in the industry, I blog from time to time about design too. Web design is more than a way to get a paycheck, it’s who I am when I’m not sleeping (okay, there was this one dream where everything had bezier handles but that’s another story).
