I proudly serve as the Peter A. Horvitz Chair of Journalism Innovation at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University. My job is to explore the intersection of journalism and technology.In addition to teaching, I work on projects for industry partners. Most recently, I initiated and co-produced The Des Moines Register’s Harvest of Change VR project, the world’s first large-scale use of virtual reality by a commercial news organization. Harvest earned an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2015 for its innovative use of 360-degree video. I am now teaching these skills to students at Newhouse who are producing their own 360 videos and CGI scenes, many of which you can see at VRStorytelling.org. Previously, I spent 20 years in the trenches of digital publishing at everywhere from Fortune 500 companies to startups. I started my career as an online producer for Washingtonpost.com, where I produced Interact, one of the first online news communities on the Web. Subsequently, as a principal product manager at America Online, I oversaw some of the Internet’s first truly global community products. In 2005, after pioneering the first implementation of a social networking platform at a U.S. newspaper, I received an NAA “20 Under 40” award. And in 2007, I received a Knight News Challenge grant to build a democratized publishing service that evolved into an eBook platform. When I'm not teaching, I am busy exploring new technologies that are shaping the future of media, which lately includes augmented reality, citizen sensor networks and drones. I am also working on an Emerging Media Platforms course that will be offered through Newhouse’s Communications@ Syracuse online master's program.
