Initially Iwas part of the frontend operations and architecture team (notionally, composition and routing), and then part of a team shoring up a core legacy project that handled all in-season reordering across the business. Zalando was an amazing opportunity to learn about and operate resilient systems at scale, and deal firsthand with some of the shockwaves that can happen when legacy systems are allowed to run a little wild.Highlights:- Was part of the dev team creating a speculative project reimagining how Zalando's knowledge and data could be blended into a new experience. Took part in extensive consultation with colleagues from a huge variety of backgrounds and disciplines and successfully helped blend their feedback an input into a project that would act as a discovery vehicle for the next phases.- Helped design a hook based performance metric gathering solution for Tailor, the template stitching layer of Zalando's frontend microservices layer.- Consultant role for other teams with problematic issues or architectural questions (especially caching / code-mangling and performance).- Extended and maintained an expansive legacy project with a team of senior engineers, applying as many best practices as possible to help make this tool fit for purpose.

Semi-official title held at the tail end of my time at DH - more of the same as below, but was also involved in architectural discussions & review, providing feedback for projects involving third parties integrating into the DH api, advising and debugging infrastructure & deployment improvements, REST(ish) API design and improvement, introducing new libraries into the frontend stack (the excellent ampersand stack being a notable example), reviewing analytics data, responding to security audits, implementing hostable search components, and (most of all!) being part of the talented team that successfully deployed a new frontend product for a very popular ecommerce platform in one of their primary markets.

Senior engineer in the frontend team, developing and extending a framework for rendering pages in node, and supplying the application code as a package that can be run on the browser - the so-called 'isomorphic' approach to writing modern frontends.Technology used:- Backbone- Browserify- ES5 & ES6 standards compliant JS (as far as possible given project restrictions)- CommonJS modules- Class based JS around backbone's extend function- Writing modules that work seamlessly across server and client rendering (autocomplete, tab view, data driven lists etc)- Node.js (stable and unstable versions)- Redis as a caching layer to accelerate slow API calls- Running node in a cluster, and analysing performance of several processes- Dealing with i18n issues for one codebase that supports various locales- Analysing deployment and suggesting solutions for integrating diverse components inside an nginx clusterResponsible for championing a series of innovations, notably vector resources on the frontend (SVGs, Icon fonts), novel solutions for large graphic resources, driving performance metrics with ApacheBench, siege etc, and sharing that knowledge. Was involved with the successful rebranding of a legacy platform under tight deadlines, delivering a large number of PRs on a cold-sight basis.Part of team responsible for technical interviews and filtering of candidates across several roles, wrote challenges and developed tests that allow candidates to discuss their solutions, both for straight up JS and for CSS / frontend.

Projects (partial list): Implemented a prototype for LikeMinds, a startup then based at Google Campus London as part of the Springboard Mobile accelerator. Given incredibly tight deadlines, we delivered a working prototype of their social recruitment platform which was succesfully demonstrated to investors.Created Android and iOS magazine publishing system for a major national Portuguese motoring magazine, based on a very clean MVC backend written in PHP 5.3 with a rich client side editor for page layout. Performing a busy cross-functional role, I was responsible for taking over a series of mobile application projects for one of the company's clients based in Barcelona, and performant client-side development for an international real- time betting exchange (betfair) which was the company's main focus.Technologies for this role were almost exclusively object-orientated JavaScript and HTML in extremis, accessing a wide variety of APIs. Frameworks included Nokia WRT on low end devices, phonegap, opera WAC widgets, jquery and YUI3, touching on native mobile SDKs where necessary. Management of the projects followed Agile methodologies (user-stories, sprints). I was also invovled with a feedback session with Opera after developing on their beta mobile framework, WAC/JIL, and relaying impressions of the platform.

After performing well with freelance projects for Daydream, including developing a site for the Portuguese Armed Forces, I joined their team as a full-time developer. Day to day tasks were development of w3c standards compliant (including WCAG compliance), SEO-friendly custom CMS and e-commerce systems, front-end development, javascript, server-side support code and maintenance of legacy projects.Additional responsibilities were system administration (Windows, Linux), client relations and training sessions, oversight of junior developer’s code and professional development, and rapid cold-sight bug fixing on legacy projects. We used a very wide range of technologies, libraries and frameworks in the pursuit of this with almost every project requiring internationalization. Created and implemented a then rarely used form of SEO giving projects a competitive edge. I also oversaw introduction of version control in all projects, and the associated training. A great experience working at a very busy agency, where the first language was Portuguese.

During this learning period I implemented projects for a wide range of clients (including the HPO) with diverse technical requirements. I maintained and developed client- and server-side code for The High Performance Organisation supporting their ISO management systems and clients, development of in-house administration systems for a financial organisation based in Liverpool, as well as smaller custom sites for . I managed to challenge myself to deliver good quality products and learn new approaches at the same time as discovering and analysing client requirements.

This second-line support role involved remote troubleshooting of NatWest's ATM network, and liaising with third-line support team professionals and support staff to maintain one of the UK's largest networks of 24 hour banking terminals. Involved basic usage of CiscoOS, NatWest knowledge management systems, and team liaison.

Following another early interest how technology relates to creativity, I worked as a house sound engineer at venues near and around Oxford. Responsibilities included technical oversight of complex in-house PA and monitoring systems, liaison with artists and bands, and working under extreme pressure in challenging environments.
