Design Resources, Inc. is a small international manufacturer & distributor of leather & fabric with operations in Seattle, Italy and Shanghai. As COO/CFO I directed & supported the China GM on vital supply chain initiatives including production planning, process improvement, cost reduction, supplier negotiations and quality control. I was also responsible for financial reporting & analysis, lender relations, product pricing, order fulfillment, credit/collections, customer service, and logistics. My typical work day at Design was less project-oriented and more tactical and urgent in nature. There was a daily emphasis on advising ownership & communicating, problem solving or negotiating with suppliers, freight forwarders, customers, sales agents and overseas employees. Several of my achievements had a longer shelf life however: * Early on I designed & executed an organizational restructuring that retained key employees, increased operational effectiveness and reduced overhead by 40%. * I repeatedly devised creative solutions for improving cash flow while retaining the support of lenders and suppliers. * Teamed with China GM to reduce customer charge-backs & rejections by emphasizing redundant inspection points and root-cause problem solving. * I reduced inventory and eliminated marginal product lines by focusing our marketing efforts on customers with highest expected lifetime values. * In my final year I secured financing which stabilized operations while the owner realigned his strategy for Design Resources.

Pace is an international manufacturer & distributor of specialty chemicals & consumer products. As CFO I directed all financial functions of this manufacturing company, including financial reporting, budgeting, cost accounting, capital procurement, treasury, IT, financial planning & analysis and lender relations. My most important contributions can be grouped into 2 categories:(1) Information: I helped the company transition to decentralized management by introducing business unit P&Ls and budgets. I then led a cross-functional team that installed a MRP system which streamlined purchasing & production planning, improved order fulfillment and reduced investment in inventory. I was also a key member of the team which redesigned the standard costing system. This led to a rationalized pricing structure and elimination of marginal products.(2) Direction: I teamed with ownership to strategically re-position the company as we planned & executed the divestiture of several non-core business units. I then brought focus & direction to the “new” Pace as part of a senior executive group that developed its first formal strategic business plan.
