About Dan Petley

I have worked as a creative practitioner since 2006. I run my fine art practice alongside my motivational workshop sessions with Brick Project CIC, where I teach people to re-frame existing skills into producing powerful and expressive public artwork.Brick Project CIC creates social painting activities that draw communities together. We invite participants to paint an individual piece of art that forms part of a collective mural and take commissions and bookings internationally.Evolving from a project in 2011, we became a UK-based community interest company (CIC) in 2019 and secured Arts Council Funding for Newtown Brick Project in Bristol in 2023 and are enjoying building on this momentum. Since forming the company my main ambition has been to fund and carry out a Brick Project in my home town, Gloucester. We're collaborating with Folk of Gloucester and need £10-15K to make it happen! My work is a multidisciplinary reciprocal process that explores hierarchy and cohesion in the creation of communal public work. I'm a clear and articulate public speaker and have vast experience with learning support for young people.

Brick Project is a community interest company who allow people to take collective ownership of an area by collaboratively creating a permanent public art piece.Evolving from a project starting in 2010, we became a CIC in 2019. We facilitate the creation of thousands of mini-artworks created by local people, which in turn become a physical and digital archive of the project itself and the community who took part.Working at unloved or neglected bricked or tiled public areas, the project performs two objectives; improving the environment people are living in and facilitating a collaborative activity where people of different backgrounds can work cooperatively on a permanent public art piece. In March 2020 we successfully completed our Crowdfunder for Plymouth Brick Project. Our May 2020 launch date for that event has been postponed until after the Covid-19 lockdown. During this time we are developing a number of voluntary projects to support our local community and need money to stay afloat. If you want to help please subscribe to our Patreon or if you would like to send us a one off donation please go to paypal.me/brickproject. Be safe and watch this space!

Dan Petley, Gutter Bling, Old Master Apr 2006 - Present

Throughout 12 years in Bristol I have created paintings and sculptures intended to be displayed as relics, manipulating formalised distillations of religious imagery, referenced through borrowed fragments from canonical art representing deep and transformative myths, incorporating found objects to express a fascination with folk art and psychedelia.I have simultaneously developed projects in a public context, allowing my work to evolve into a multidisciplinary reciprocal process that explores hierarchy and cohesion in the creation of communal public work. I became a Spike Associate in early 2023.My graffiti work as Old Master ended when I lost the use of my right index finger due to early onset arthritis in 2014. I had a joint replacement in 2016 which restored a majority of movement but I generally only paint in acrylics these days. I had some good commissions and painted at both See No Evil events at Nelson Street in Bristol. This work evolved into Numinous, painted works manifesting individualised devotional entities experimenting with symbolic portrayals of the heavenly realm using lost or discarded frames as a starting point. Exploring Mark Fisher's hauntology concept, I evoke spiritual meaning by manipulating formalised distillations of religious imagery referenced through the subtle adaptation of depicted martyrs and winged humanoid forms.Since 2005 I have been making an ongoing series of sculptures to be worn as jewellery from found objects, called Gutter Bling. This multi-faceted practice explores the relationship between individual memory and collective mythology.

  • Brick Project
    Project Manager
    Brick Project Oct 2011 - Sep 2019
    Worldwide
The project started as a self funded experiment in Stokes Croft in Bristol, an area where for many years activists and artists have struggled to expose issues relating to gentrification. By giving the community an opportunity to work side by side with people with whom they wouldn't have otherwise communicated I opened up opportunities for public expression and relationships between strangers.A bricked or tiled area is chosen, then across one or more 14 day sessions, local people are invited to paint one brick each with support from an artist facilitator. Anything based on the experiences of people living in or passing through the location can be rendered within the allotted brick or tile. The project intends to give the people a piece of the town, a personalised cultural segment that is entirely theirs. Materials are provided for them to paint anything they want; simple or detailed, written or drawn.Any space that is divided into bricks or tiles is appropriate for the project, which can be adapted for almost any available space that would reach a large cross section of people. I like to focus on sites that appear decayed, overgrown and unloved but are still used by a variety of people. By inviting those who pass through and inhabit areas to make a permanent painted piece they are encouraged to freely express themselves, improvising a giant collective image to inspire hope and commitment to the future of the community. This creates a permanent piece that will not only be considered an attraction but a source of pride for those who take part in its development.Following further projects in Macclesfield and the Bulgarian wilderness we became a Community Interest Company in 2019.
  • University Of Bristol Systems Centre
    Workshop Facilitator/ Mentor
University Of Bristol Systems Centre Feb 2012 - Sep 2014
I facilitated workshops for EngD students at the University of Bristol Systems Centre as part of their Public Engagement module from 2012 - 2014. • My sessions have been developed to encourage PHD engineering students to reframe existing skills into painting.• The sessions allow them to systematically think through potential ideas, then compose a finished piece relating to their research.• This develops confidence and promotes team building strategies.• The final piece allows each student to engage with an audience, and encourages people to ask questions about their research. This work has resulted in a number of permanent pieces, including the 'Brunel/Jobs' mural at Queens building in the Clifton campus (February 2012), an art gallery corridor in the same building -(January-March 2014) and a spray-painted car (Painted at See No Evil graffiti festival August 2012) that is still driven by the Industrial Doctorate Centre Co-ordinator Sarah. Each of these pieces are a testament to the creative ability that resides within all systematic thinkers, and continue to promote their genius long after the completion of each project.
