Member - ALPA United Airlines Master Executive Council Critical Incident Response Program

Presenter at the 2017 Pilot Assistance Forum for the Air Line Pilots Association. My presentation was in regard to Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP) human factors response with the crew to the FedEx Flight 910 accident in Fort Lauderdale in late 2016. I had less than 24 hours to help prepare the crew for an initial NTSB hearing about the event. Working with FedEx management, FedEx CIRP (Company & ALPA), United and JetBlue ALPA CIRP, and ALPA National CIRP & Legal, the crew was prepared to testify as required.

Past service included over a decade of service with the the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) in a variety of roles from a member on various committees to elected representative and member of the ALPA Board of Directors. Also, served in a variety of roles with United to include Line Check Airman, Facilitator in Captain's Development Course and Flywize Flight Planning programs, Flight Operations Duty Manager, Miami Pilot Domicile Chief Pilot.

Beta Tester for SKYPATH iPad application. SKYPATH is an online real time predictive turbulence application. It provides automatic online sensing of turbulence, analysis, and display for commercial aviation. It allows pilots to see what's ahead and avoid turbulence by choosing a safe route or altitude, and alert the cabin crew. The system uses accelerometer and GPS data from Tablets and other mobile devices by transmitting real-time data from the air to a server and back to the users. SKYPATH operates in the background and has the ability to alert pilots ahead of time.

Volunteer for Flight Operations Fatigue Risk Management Study. The objective of the FRMS study is to allow United to increase the prescriptive flight duty periods applicable under Part 117.17 and 117.2.This study, in conjunction with Washing State University is a research study that will measure sleep, fatigue, sleepiness, and cognitive performance as pilots go about their normal schedule of work, rest, sleep, and other activities. This research study is being done to compare similar flights where one flight is well within the current FAA regulations (compliant) while the other flight is at the upper limits of current FAA regulations (bordering on non-compliant) to measure differences or equivalence between the two types of flights on pilot sleep, sleepiness, fatigue, and performance. We will compare a bordering on non-compliant ultra-long range flight from Newark, USA (EWR) to Mumbai, India (BOM) to a similar, fully compliant long range flight from Newark, USA to Tel Aviv, Israel (TLV). The data from this study will help us better understand how sleep and performance are affected by working long flight duty periods, specifically in the ultra-long range flight from EWR to BOM compared to the long range flight from EWR to TLV. The findings will be used to improve safety, pilot performance and well-being through the drafting of route-specific guidance for rest and sleep, preflight, outbound flight, layover, inbound flight, and post-flight for Newark to Mumbai round trip. Pilots can only take part in this study if working for United Airlines and flying double augmented flights from Newark, USA to Mumbai, India and from Newark, USA to Tel Aviv, Israel in Boeing 777 aircraft.

Currently working as a Boeing 777 Captain responsible for aircraft operations and command in worldwide operations. As an LCA I conduct training for Initial Operating Experience, requalification training along with evaluating Captains and First Officers. This includes International, Special Area, Oceanic, Polar, and Special Airport Qualifications. Also conducting Enroute Checkrides and evaluations for Captains and First Officers along with Quality Control Checkrides for LCA's on the B-777 in worldwide operations. Involved with pilot iPad testing and evaluations of a variety of applications to include scheduling, flight planning, aircraft operations, and navigation items.

Responsible for managing events surrounding world-wide airline operations and personal representative for the Sr. Vice President of Flight Operations. Duties included dealing with local and federal transportation and law enforcement agencies, multi-level inter-departmental crisis decision management, and contractual labor issues.

Selected and designated as a member of the "Top 100 Visionary Leaders & Sounding Board" for the CEO and Executive Board of United Airlines. Role included mapping out a future business plan, developing and mentoring corporate leadership, and developing an employee culture to include diversity and inclusion in the dynamic airline industry.

Responsibilities included direct interaction with divisions throughout the company, federal and local transportation and law enforcement agencies, organized labor groups, and civic organizations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach airports with a focus on safety, employee morale, reliability, and customer satisfaction. Also served as a mentor and coach for employees seeking advancement, investigating to identify trends and problems with their causes in an effort to seek possible resolutions, maintaining respect and accountability in the workplace, and developing and maintaining and realistic budget.

Special Assignment as a Flight Operations Representative to the United Airlines Employee Coalition in an effort to procure the Chicago - Tokyo route authority in the 1990 Department of Transportation Bilateral Trade Agreement with Japan. In both Chicago and Washington D.C. in this effort. Lobbied both Houses of Congress and many State Governors as well as major corporations and labor groups for their support. Also lobbied Congress against the inclusion of U.S. domestic air routes in the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs. Our team was successful on both issues. Received recognition from both United Airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association for my efforts.

Assigned to work on Special Assignment with United Airlines to the the "Save Our Routes to Tokyo" employee coalition to save the United Airlines lucrative Seattle to Tokyo route authority. We were successful in our efforts to retain the route authority. Received recognition from the United Airlines Air Line Pilots Association Master Executive Council, United Airlines Air Line Pilots Association Council 27 (Seattle), and an Award of Merit for United Airlines.

Working as a mentor in the Aviation Operations Program we support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximize their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance, and become the person they aspire to be. We also work to gain insights from the mentoree’s background and history that can be used in assisting the mentoree’s professional and personal development, provide critical feedback in key areas, such as communications, interpersonal relationships, technical abilities, change management and leadership skills. Further, we help to develop a sharper focus on what is needed to grow professionally within the industry, discuss specific skills and knowledge that are relevant to personal goals, share knowledge about the industry’s culture and unspoken rules that can be critical for success. As a result, this allows the mentor to adapt more quickly to the industry’s culture as well as be a friendly ear with which to share frustrations as well as successes.

Insight provided from my backgrounds in airline, corporate, charter, and flight instructor roles as a pilot, administrator, management, and labor representative in the industry.

Held position of Manager and Head Coach for Florida Bombers 18 & under Unsigned High School Seniors Baseball team. Traveled to seven baseball showcase tournaments in the Southeast US over the summer. Goal was to place as many boys in a college baseball program as possible. We ended up with 10 of the boys moving in to collegiate baseball programs. Some were able to obtain scholarships as well.

I served as Baseball Commissioner and Member of the Plantation Athletic League Board of Directors overseeing a 1200+ youth player program. The program also included a Fall/Winter Baseball Clinic and Skills Developmental Program; a Travel Baseball Program; and a Youth Umpire Mentoring Program. Additional duties included developing and overseeing a 200K/year budget; negotating contracts for for uniforms, equipment, outside contractors, awards & trophies, and sponsorships; scheduling for over 1000 games per year plus playoffs; coordinating and scheduling make-up games; arranging and obtaining permits for all events with the City; coordinating special events with the City Parks & Recreation Department, Mayor's Office, Police and Fire Departments such as Opening Day Ceremonies and Parade; organizing the Annual Fundraising Baseball Event with the Florida Marlins; equipment distribution & inventory; conducting player, coach, and umpire registrations; scheduling and coordinating player drafts; Rules development, oversight, and enforcement; background checks and selection for youth coaches; negotating, scheduling, and coordinating training events for players, coaches, and the youth umpire program; scheduling and coordinating equipment and unifrom distribution and collections; oversight and final authority on conflict resolution and disiplinary issues, arranging concessions as well as outside equipment vendors and for various events; and arranging award and trophy distribution.

Founding member and Executive Board member of this grassroots group. APSA successfully lobbied Congress, The White House, the Department of Transportation, and Federal Law Enforcement agencies for increased airline security issues including the development, funding, establishment, and implementation of the Federal Flight Deck Officer Program.

I served as an elected representative from 1994 thru 1997 in United Airlines Council 150 in Miami. Also saved as a sitting member of the Air Line Pilots Association Board of Directors. Work included oversight for multiple committees to include System Schedule, Contract Negotiations, Shuttle by United, Hotel, Contract Interpretations, Training, Uniform, Security, Central Air Safety, International, Jumpseat, Membership, and Professional Standards. I also worked with the Organizing Department, Legislative Affairs, Strike Preparedness, and Family Awareness committees. I represented The United AIrlines Pilot Group at the National Employees Ownership Conference and attended the ALPA National Leadership Conference, Hickory Ridge Management/Labor Conference, and served as a facilitator in the United Airlines Master Executive Council New LEC Officer Training course and the National Affairs Steering Committee MEC/LEC Officer training program. I also hosted and emceed several UAL Council 150 Retirement Parties.

Developer and facilitator with the New Local Executive Council Officer Training and Introduction Program in conjunction with the United Airlines Air Line Pilots Association Master Executive Council Officers. The program involved training for new elected representative in Federal labor law, grievance and discipline issues, parliamentary procedures, ALPA Constitution and By-Laws, ALPA and UAL MEC Policies and Procedures, substance abuse (HIMS), harassment and discrimination, public relations, and political protocol.

Working as part of the Organizing Team at the Air Line Pilots Association National Organizing Department work with organizing Presidential Airlines.

Managed and responsible for oversight of FAA Part 61, 91, 135, & 141 flight school, corporate, and charter operations. Represented the City of Bartow, Bartow Airport Authority, and the Bartow Flying Service, in conjunction with the US Air Force, McDill AFB Tactical Fighter Training Wing and the FAA in community relations and safety issues. Also worked directly with sales, marketing, and customer service related issues. Designated as a DOT and FAA Accident Prevention Counselor for the Southern Region. Also conducted FAR Part 141 Flight Instruction training for Private, Commercial, Multi-Engine, Instrument, Certified Flight Instructor, Multi-Engine Flight Instructor, Instrument Flight Instructor, and Airline Transport Pilot Certificates.

Served as a lineman providing fuel & oil servicing as well as minor maintenance and cleaning of flight school aircraft while taking flying lessons. Aircraft included seven C-150's, three C-172's, one B-33 Debonair, three BE-95 Travel-Air's, one Queen Air, one King Air, and one DC-3.
