I currently serve as the Director of the Pathology and Biorepository Core (PBC) at the Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I have over 25 years of experience in biorepository and laboratory operations with extensive bench experience in tissue procurement. The PBC includes the laboratory core services Biorepository, Histology, Pathology, and Molecular Processing as well as a Quality Assurance group. The PBC Biorepository is CAP-accredited through the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Biorepository Accreditation Program and received this accreditation in 2012. The PBC also provides biorepository services for multiple national contractors including the NCI.Before joining VARI in 2010, I was employed with The Ohio State University Department of Pathology for 11 years. I served as the Coordinator for the Cancer and Leukemia Group B’s (CALGB) Pathology Coordinating Office (PCO) as well as the Biobank Manager of the AIDS and Cancer Specimen Resource (ACSR) for three years. The CALGB was an NCI-sponsored Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program with the goal of conducting definitive, randomized, late phase clinical treatment trials across a broad range of cancer diseases. The ACSR banked tissue from around the Midwest for distribution to primarily HIV/AIDS research. Prior to those positions, I held positions with the Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN) Midwestern Division as Technical Laboratory Supervisor, Pathology Agent, and Anatomic Laboratory Technician for 8 years. It was in those positions with the CHTN that I gained invaluable bench experience in all aspects of human tissue procurement.I am a member of the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER), the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF), and an executive board member of the Great Lakes Biorepository Research Network (GLBRN). I also serve as a peer review program inspector for the CAP Biorepository Accreditation Program (BAP).
