At Duke, I developed software for real-time commodities trading portfolio management -- a big departure from manufacturing robots (and a steep learning curve), but very fun. This was also my introduction to writing web-based applications, which was still somewhat novel for the financial industry in 2010.

I spent the first five years of my career as a software engineer at firm that built manufacturing machinery. My focus was offline programming for robots that manufacture composite materials. I also focused on converting single-threaded applications into multi-threaded applications to increase computational speeds and reduce processing time.
