Ironically, given that I was a Bruin, I got into USC's Law Program but opted to stay in Korea instead. Later, I was poached by my eventual business partner to bootstrap an English Academy based on my teaching experience.Despite not having any formal business background and working on a shoestring budget (10x less) than our competitors in the ultra-competitive Seoul education market, we managed to gain traction through our innovated practices and grew from 6 students to 180 in less than six months. Some of our innovative and disruptive practices included:- Smaller classroom sizes (max 7 students)- US based real textbooks (not English conversation workbooks)- Focus on writing skills while others were conversation and reading based- Whole language integrated learning. Students didn't have completely separate workbooks for each subject; instead, vocabulary and grammar lessons were pulled from their reading lessons- Completely leveled pre-set curriculum with a rigorous placement exam (1 hour) prior to entry. Each student also met 1:1 with a placement advisor to establish final level. At that time, many institutes let the clients choose their own levels and accepted all students. Also most teachers were teaching their own curriculum while E-Spirit teachers were all teaching from the pre-created, vetted, whole language curriculum.
