About Dan Venning
I hold a Ph.D. in Theatre from the CUNY Graduate Center and am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre & Dance (appointment shared with the English department) at Union College in Schenectady, NY. I have over a decade of teaching experience at the college level with an extremely diverse group of students from several leading colleges and universities. All my teaching engages students through individual mentoring, writing, debate, collaboration, and active, engaged discussion, and my pedagogy is informed by my active scholarship.My dissertation, entitled "Shakespeare for the Volk: Shakespeare and the Development of the Idea of German Nationhood, 1817 - 1867," was advised by Professor Marvin Carlson. My research interests are interdisciplinary, including early modern drama and performance, dramaturgy, audience and reception studies, theatre history, musical theatre, German drama, and nineteenth-century theatre, Asian theatre, and contemporary performance, but are rooted in questions of the role of the artist in creating and defining the nation, whether artists producing Shakespeare in Germany or Taylor Mac performing in America today.I also hold a B.A. in English and Theater Studies from Yale University and an M.Litt. in Shakespeare Studies from the University of St Andrews, and have worked as the Associate Dramaturg for the California Shakespeare Theater.For my academic profile, including a recent version of my full CV as well as .pdf copies of several articles I have written and syllabi for selected courses I have taught, see my Academia.edu profile at https://union.academia.edu/DanVenning .My Union College faculty webpage is at https://www.union.edu/theater-dance/faculty-staff/dan-venning .
