Conduct and guide UX research services for clients in the Portland, Oregon area. Services include formal iterative and summative usability studies, ethnographic research, design workshops, product design evaluation, and business consulting.

At Welsh Family Wines we produce vineyard specific wines that are food friendly, expressive of varietal characteristics, and made with low intervention winery techniques. Our goal is to create wine that is representative of the vineyard, the vintage, and the fruit. We use native yeasts, temperature controlled fermentations, and minimal cellar interventions to create and enhance these characteristics of the varietals.

Plan and execute user research activities for the Enterprise console node management, Forge web site, modules, and customer purchase experience. My duties include meeting with key stakeholders to gather research requirements, performing research activities to collect needed data, and communicating results and business implications to executives and the wider team. Specific techniques used include ethnography/site visits, automated user testing, remote usability testing, quantitative surveys, and interviews. Activities range from tactical usability evaluations to strategic research focusing on lines of business. In addition, as a senior member of the team, I help establish overall user experience and design practices.

Member of class responsible for all facets of winemaking for fruit donated to school by Washington state vineyards. Activities included harvest, crush, pressing, fermentation — alcohol and MLF (yeast pitching and additions), and wine additions (e.g. SO2 and enzymes), stabilization, clarification, blending, filtering, bottling, standard wine movements, and winery sanitation. Lab coursework includes wine microbiology, wine chemistry, and enology lab analysis (SO2 — AO and ripper, TA, MLF spotting, alcohol/hydrometer, and pH). Wines produced include Muscat of Norway rose, Mourvedre rose, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Sangiovese, Lemberger, Nebbiolo/Carmenere/Mourvedre blend, and Pinot Noir.

Planned and executed user research for the Windows hardware driver certification web site and hardware usability testing for OEM prototypes. My duties included establishing research plans and goals, conducting individual research activities, reporting results, and creating assessment tools to evaluate progress and make strategic adjustments to ensure goals were met. In addition, I communicated global design guidelines and provided information to partner developers to enable them to develop applications and hardware.

Provided user centered research and strategic business planning for corporate web sites and software applications. My focus included ethnography/field studies, contextual research, usability testing, rapid iterative testing and evaluation (RITE), card sorting, customer value elicitation exercises, survey design, customer panels, and heuristic reviews. Strategic planning work involved advising on evaluation processes that teams could use to measure success of product development efforts.

Implemented a field research program and longitudinal research processes for TurboTax products. My duties included setting goals for product usability, developing multi-year user research plans, executing all phases of data collection, using data to empirically evaluate effectiveness of development efforts toward usability goals, and providing results to teams in presentations and written reports. This work involved collaborating with a core team to develop and design new product offerings to expand into new markets and customer segments.

Consumer Software Division: Planned and executed user research and formative design activities for new markets. Macintosh Business Unit: Managed usability activities for assigned products, including Mac Office, Virtual PC, and Messenger for the Mac. Research techniques used included traditional lab studies, ethnography/field studies, RITE lab studies, online quantitative surveys, and discount methods including heuristic analysis and cognitive walkthroughs. I also managed the activities of usability contractors and vendors.MSN Division: Planned and executed usability activities for several MSN and Home Product Division software applications including Digital Image Pro and Digital Image Suite, MSN Photos.com, e-mail, instant messenger applications, and the overall user experience for MSN Internet subscription software. Research techniques used included traditional lab studies, remote usability studies, RITE lab studies, heuristic analysis and cognitive walkthrough, online and mailed quantitative surveys, and ethnography/field studies. Additional responsibilities included engaging vendors and managing vendor-executed research, and managing and working with cross-team/cross-division strategic planning teams for research for several product domains (photos, email, and purchase and billing).

Managed the operations of several federally-funded medical research projects. My administrative duties included planning and monitoring budgets, implementing procedures, and hiring and managing 15 staff members. My research duties included designing studies, developing surveys, developing and implementing study protocols, working with developers to design databases, performing data analysis, assisting in grant preparation, and writing reports. This included developing and implementing research evaluation plans and preparing evaluation progress reports for funding agencies. My participant-specific duties included recruitment, obtaining informed consent, collecting samples, conducting interviews, and answer patients' questions.

Managed program evaluation activities for department and community-based health intervention activities. My research duties included designing evaluation experiments, working with clients to develop research goals, collecting data, managing and analyzing data, writing reports, and presenting research results. I also represented the Health District at community meetings to plan community assessment activities, track progress of community interventions, and present results of evaluation data. My participant-specific duties included interviewing participants at their workplace, administering questionnaires, and conducting interviews.

My other responsibilities included writing grants, writing scientific reports and manuscripts for publication, managing student employees, and representing EpiCC at community meetings. In addition, I was a teaching assistant in the graduate epidemiology program.
