CurrentWe’ve created an open source platform for the collaborative discussion, critique and linking of the world’s knowledge. Our goal is to facilitate better access to the world's expertise as a resource to society, and to better focus that expertise in service of issues that benefit from it.In 20 years young people will be surprised when you tell them that it wasn't always possible to have a high quality discussion over any content, or to know what the best available minds thought about key issues, just like they struggle today to imagine a world without the Internet.
Executive Chairman
CurrentWhen Bruce and I launched the online travel industry in 1994, our goal was to automate booking so that people could do it for themselves. Now, everyone does: Mission accomplished. Now we've teamed up again to automate the corporate travel management function-- an equally large opportunity. Thrilled that Bruce and I have the chance to pair up again to tackle this.
Co-Founder, Board Member
CurrentThose of us running projects in open source, open knowledge infrastructure convened the Joint Roadmap for Open Science Tools in October of 2018 (jrost.org). At that conference, we outlined the need for an effort to increase the available funding for projects, and the seed of Invest In Open Infrastructure (IOI) was born. Over the next year and a half we brought together key stakeholders, a steering committee and initial funding, and recruited Kay Thaney, our executive director. I'm proud to have helped lead that effort and excited to see what IOI can do to to increase the sustainability and health of the most critical sector of scholarly infrastructure.
Founding Board Member
CurrentGetaround (NYSE: GETR) was conceived and launched as our class project at Singularity University in 2009 (led by my students Sam Zaid and Jessica Scorpio). I was the initial advisor and first board member. They launched the peer-to-peer carsharing space, operate in over 300 cities around the world, and recently went public. They've come a long way!
Lead Series A Investor, Board Member
Take Selenium, the world's first open source functional testing platform, the developers who built it (including the guy that implemented it at google), and bring it to the cloud, with a rich set of additional functionality. "Testing on tap". John Dunham and I brought this to the team at the Contrarian Group, where joined as partner, and raised the A round. I served on the board for 8 years. Sauce continues to scale as a private company with hundreds of millions in ARR.

ISIS (In Situ Iron Studies) is a group of twelve oceanographic institutions that have come together to answer the unknowns regarding the role of iron in regulating the ocean’s capacity to remove atmospheric carbon dioxide. Its mission is to explore the potential ability of a technique known as Ocean Iron Fertilization (OIF) to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Earth’s atmosphere and to understand the environmental impacts of the technique. OIF has been field tested in 14 separate open ocean cruises since 1993. Our goal is to investigate the potential for larger scale demonstrations. The range of scientists and institutions involved represent some of the key figures involved in this research over the last twenty years. The consortium website, available at http://isisconsortium.org/, describes the planned activities and members of ISIS. I started ISIS together with Dr. Ken Buesseler (WHOI), Dr. Richard Lampitt (NOC UK) and Dr. Lew Rothstein (URI GSO).Participating institutions include:Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre, AustraliaNational Oceanography Centre, UKMoss Landing Marine Laboratories, USNetherlands Institute for Sea Research, NetherlandsUniversity of Hawaii, USUniversity of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign, USUniversity of Maine, USUniversity of Massachusetts, Boston, USUniversity of Plymouth, UKUniversity of Rhode Island, USWoods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USXiamen University, China
Founder, Ceo
Climos was founded to explore various processes for naturally removing large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere--primarily focusing on a technique known as Ocean Iron Fertilization (OIF), which mimics a natural process where large dust storms fertilize open ocean phytoplankton blooms.I cofounded Climos with my mom, Dr. Margaret Leinen, Executive Director of Scripps Insitute of Oceanography, and former President, American Geophysical Union and former Assistant Director, Geosciences for the National Science Foundation. It was one of the most profound pleasures of my professional life to have the privilege to work alongside her.Climos had a scientific advisory board which included Dr. Rita Colwell, 11th Director of the National Science Foundation, Dr. Bob Gagosian, President of the Joint Oceanographic Institutions, and Dr. Tom Lovejoy, Chief Scientist of the Heinz Center and former Executive Vice President of the World Wildlife Foundation among others. We spent most of our effort clearing the regulatory hurdles preventing larger scale scientific studies from moving forward. We also helped assemble a group of academic institutions and research scientists who could lead those larger scale studies. This group is called the ISIS (In Situ Iron Studies) Consortium, and I have now joined that group in support of this further research.
Founding Advisor And Track Chair For Energy And The Environment
Participated in the initial advisory session for Ray Kurzweil and Peter Diamandis' Singularity University in 2008, then returned as Track chair (along with Sunil Paul) for Energy and the Environment for the inaugural summer session in 2009. My students started Getaround, a peer-to-peer carsharing company, as our class project. They've now raised $100s of millions in funding, have expanded domestically and acquired the largest operator in Europe, and will most definitely change the world with this idea. I'm proud as hell of them.
Founder, Ceo, Cto
In 1994, at the age of 26 I launched the online travel industry, and the SaaS industry, together with my best friend Bruce Yoxsimer and my dad Al Whaley. We created the first web based interface to book a travel reservation, and the first airline reservation ever made over the web was booked through a server in my living room in 1995. We were first with air, car and hotel, seat maps, an integrated mileage program, and many many other elements.I came up with the idea, wrote most of the early code, the business plan, raised the funding and served as CEO and CTO over six years. We raised over $125M in funding, took GetThere public through an IPO in 1999, and then sold it to The Sabre Group (NYSE: TSG) in 2000 for $770M in cash (over 100x to the Series A). At its sale, with nearly 600 employees, GetThere was the leading SaaS provider of Internet-based travel reservation services, handling over 50% of the travel booked online through approximately 150 different public and private websites and services.Under Sabre, GetThere continues to serve customers such as United Airlines and American Express, as well as major international corporate customers such as Procter and Gamble, Chevron, Nokia, and Cisco. It is used by 75% of the Fortune 200 and at over US $10B a year is one of the largest B2B transaction services by revenue in the world (travel is the large non-core expense in the enterprise).I dearly hope that they have replaced all my code.
Founder, President
Had idea, wrote code, wrote business plan, raised capital, ran operations. Rebranded as GetThere and took it IPO.
