Associate Editor/Digital Content ManagerReporter Newspapers - Springs Publishing Jun 2011 - Jan 2014Sandy SpringsDuties: - Writing and editing content for four bi-weekly newspapers- Producing 10 or more articles each week- Managing content for Reporternewspapers.net and boosting web traffic- Producing videos to enhance reader experiences - Building relationships with readers, leaders and experts - Learning about the growing importance of SEO- Building our audience using social media- Developing "Where You Live" neighborhood profile series Reporter Newspapers is a trailblazing company, a pioneer in hyper-local journalism that began well before the industry went into a free fall. Publisher Steve Levene is a smart businessman who has carved out a successful niche covering Georgia's new cities: Sandy Springs, Dunwoody and Brookhaven. While it might seem odd that a journalist with a background in daily newspapers would move to a paper that publishes every two weeks, I saw it as an opportunity to learn about publishing from the ground up. In addition to gaining a better understanding of the hyper-local business model, I also continued developing my skills as a digital content manager. During my time posting and editing content for Reporternewspapers.net, web traffic surged by more than 100 percent. We offer quality over quantity and we are the go-to source for all information about Georgia's new cities. Reporter Newspapers is also where I began to learn about the growing importance of SEO in our industry. It's the future of this field and learning it is essential to journalists looking to reach customers, our readers. I also continued to expand my Twitter following and began regularly producing videos for our website. I work with a great team of journalists. We care about our four communities and the people who live there. I'm proud to be a part of one of Atlanta's finest publications. -
Hamilton County Government ReporterChattanooga Times Free Press Apr 2010 - May 2011Chattanooga, Tennessee AreaDuties:- Covered Hamilton County government- Filled in for education, Chattanooga government reporters as needed - Connected with our readers using social media: Facebook and Twitter- Coordinated with online team - Broke exclusive stories that had the competition following our lead In Tennessee I learned how to engage readers using digital content and multimedia. It is a highly-competitive media environment and you were expected to be prompt, precise and particular. You couldn't get away with simply matching the competition. You had to one-up them using your wits and creativity. I worked with some of the nation's best reporters in Chattanooga, Tenn. While we each brought different abilities to the table, I was known as the aggressive watchdog who put customers, the readers, at the top of my priority list. While I enjoyed my time there, my wife and I found amazing opportunities in Atlanta that we simply could not ignore. I encourage people who like good journalism to read Timesfreepress.com. It continues to amaze and impress me. Also the company president, Jason Taylor, is one of the brightest minds in the country when it comes to reinventing the role of daily newspapers. He's kept the paper relevant in challenging times. -
Reporter/Assistant EditorThe Anniston Star Apr 2006 - Feb 2011Anniston, AlabamaDuties: - Covered Anniston, Oxford and education as a reporter - As an assistant metro editor I handled writing duties and the last phase of the daily production process- Posted web content and produced multimedia projects I got my start at one of the finest little newspapers in America. The Anniston Star wasn't afraid to question conventional wisdom or challenge the status quo. George Wallace famously dubbed it the "Red Star" because the paper's editorial board supported integrating public schools. I figured if George Wallace didn't like you, you must be doing something right. I learned so much about reporting during my early days at the paper. I benefited from the experiences of brilliant writers and invaluable mentors. During my time there I covered:- Anniston city politics- The McClellan Joint Powers Authority, a reuse authority dedicated to the redevelopment of a former military base- Oxford city politics- Environmental issues, in particular PCBs and the chemical weapons incinerator - Public education at all levelsI was eventually fortunate enough to be promoted to Assistant Metro Editor. I managed a team of amazingly talented journalists and weathered the first gusts of wind from the gathering storm headed for our industry. Like most journalists at this renowned teaching paper, I moved on to a bigger paper. But the community that began as Annie's Town will always hold a special place in my heart.
