Responsible for the streaming data engineering efforts for the modernization of the Army HRC data ETL systems using Apache Kafka and Confluent Kafka JDBC connectors. Created and modified Microsoft SQL Stored Procedures to take JSON formatted Kafka event data from over 40 topics into relational tabular data. Created custom upsert functionality that ensures idempotency with the data ingest process to ensure duplicates and stale data are not an issue. Developed SSIS packages to run the topic updates to take streaming data to fit into legacy static data pipeline methodologies. Created multiple interfaces for external HRC customers to convert the event driven data into data formats that match their legacy systems to provide a seamless transition to modern data streaming processes. Mentored other developers on the pros and cons of live event streaming and provided consolation to government personnel on the infrastructure challenges that are presented with maintaining an enterprise streaming solution. Responsible for the ingestion, formatting, tagging transformation, and presentation of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) and Special Operation Forces (SOF) data sources as identified by USASOC G2 into USASOC data repository as well as exporting the data externally to the rest of PM Intel Systems & Analytics Intelligence Processing Center (IPC) data enterprise as an IPC Data Source. Automated ingestion of approximately 80 RSS and SharePoint data sources with multiple URLs into the proper database schema using a YAML file processed by a custom Puppet module and a NiFi flow to download and ingest into Oracle. As a result, new RSS and SharePoint sources only require three lines of YAML text to begin ingestion. Developed data verification and clean up processes for JSON and XML formatted data using NiFi and Java to verify ingested data meets USASOC’s data quality standards as well as prevent the ingestion of classified data that the systems are not rated for. Implemented new XML schema standards to help keep USASOC data similar in display while allowing the creation and storage of applicable metadata and locational data that previously was not tagged nor stored as just the ingested text was kept. Developed new XSL stylesheets to aid in the display of this new format on web browsers. Re-engineered data transfer flow from an older Oracle Database schema to a newer schema stored in a new Oracle database. Increased throughput from an average of a hundred thousand rows daily to one to three million rows daily while simultaneously ensuring the data is cleaned up and formatted properly. Refactored and rewrote numerous NiFi flows to correct deficiencies, ingestion errors, API updates, and improper data standards. This resulted in the ingestion of over 100,000 missing records and their corresponding binary files from multiple source types such as REST APIs, Apache Kafka, and standard web services.
