Where and how is the organization investing in cross-functional trainings? Is it planning for the future or hanging on to the past? How does it compare to competitors? Are costs not being allocated correctly? What strategies are generating motivated and fully productive employees?And—very important to an analytical thinker like myself—the data answers many questions. There’s an exciting puzzle that needs to be examined; each strand followed to its source to identify discrepancies. The data tells a story of the past and creates a roadmap for the future. Similarly, my past human resource activities and accomplishments paint a clear path to success in the future.Rather than resting comfortably in the middle, I gravitate to the edges—the most challenging employee situations, stickiest investigative problems, and organizations where I can change things for the better.Over the past 14 years, I’ve made a difference to colleagues and stakeholders within Arlington County Government by taking the reins of assigned divisions and strengthening processes, systems, and technologies to improve employee engagement functions.At the edges, change and uncertainty are the norms. Of course, not everyone thrives in those conditions, but that’s where I can use my most vital traits—strong customer service, pro-active, exceptional communication, and thirst for continuous learning—and make the most significant difference.
