The story of a honey badger escaping its pen in a BBC documentary inspired me deeply. The honey badger’s resourcefulness and creativity helped him escape, and that creativity became the foundation of my brand. Since childhood, creativity and resourcefulness have been central to who I am—traits I inherited from my dad. My father grew up in St. Lucia, one of 14 children, with very limited financial resources. But, like many Caribbeans, he made the most of what little he had. His father started a small business importing everyday items to the island and, by age 14, he was helping his father and brother run and expand it.When his family moved to England, my father opened a garage where he fixed cars. He was an accomplished mechanic, taking scrap cars, fixing them up, and selling them. I often wondered, "Why is he bothering with that piece of junk? Watching him taught me an important lesson: an expert can see potential where others can’t. Creativity and resourcefulness turn nothing into something valuable. From a young age, I had a gift for drawing anything I saw. As soon as I could hold a pencil, I copied everything that caught my eye. My dad nurtured this talent by sharing stories with my brother and me about making the best of what he and his siblings had while growing up. These stories ignited my passion for creativity and resourcefulness. I wanted to be like him—finding solutions and seeing possibilities where others saw limitations.As I grew up, my brother and I didn’t see our low economic status as a limitation. Like the honey badger, we didn’t focus on the obstacles in our way; instead, we used what we had to improve our situation. This mentality is at the core of how I approach business today, and it drives the work we do at Danzy Design and Marketing.Big budgets and fancy offices are hollow without creativity. The spark, the engine, the fuel that drives success comes from something deeper. It’s not something you’re born with or can buy—it’s cultivated through life experiences, especially adversity.
