Domestic Violence Victims Advocate- Social Worker
In June 2011 I was asked to join the Mississippi Attorney General's Office, the state's clearinghouse for Domestic Violence Services. In the office, I function in two primary capacities; direct social services to statewide clients and conference presenter. Day to day activities include training law enforcement, fire departments and other community agencies regarding domestic violence services, recent legislation, and "best advocacy practices for victims of domestic violence." Most presentations count toward the required hours of training law enforcement must receive each year to maintain their license. Providing advocacy services, including crisis intervention, referral services, and tracking domestic violence rates across the state are among many of the tasks I work on every day. Additionally, I spend time researching available grants in an effort to leverage existing federal funds available to state government entities, such as the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
Program Social Worker
To broaden my skillset, in early 2010 I began working with the newly established Mississippi Centralized Intake Program (established late 2009). All reports of abuse and neglect are routed through this central program and then sent to the county offices for investigation and handling. It was in this position that I gained valuable on-the-job training working with people in crisis. On a daily basis, I answered calls regarding child abuse and vulnerable adults on this newly established statewide hotline. I was tasked with conducting an immediate assessment of the call to determine type (abuse/referral/information), complete a thorough verbal intake, input said information into the appropriate database in a clear, systematic manner, and then forward to the appropriate county within a 60 minute timeframe.
Health Facility Surveyor Ii (Regulatory)
At the Mississippi Department of Health I worked in two primary capacities:- I conducted annual and follow up surveys at various health facilities across the state.- I investigated complaints at Long Term Care Facilities throughout the state. This regulatory position required a thorough and sifting review of facilities policies, procedures and "scopes of services" in light of existing state and federal regulations. After said review I would assist in the compilation of an audit report to be given to the facility and maintained by the Mississippi Department of Health.
Katrina Aid Today Program Recovery Specialist Supervisor
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina I sought a position that would enable me to utilize my Master's degree in Social Work to serve the countless thousands who were effected by this natural disaster. In addition to my supervisory role, other job duties consisted of a broad range of case management services, including but not limited to: crisis intervention, disaster assistance, budget management training, home visits, job placement, and home relocation services in coordination with Habitat for Humanity. The Salvation Army worked with local, state, and federal agencies "Doing the Most Good" for those individuals and families effected by Hurricane Katrina.
Drug Rehabilitation Counselor
While attending Jackson State University full-time I worked as a drug rehabilitation counselor at the Mississippi Department of Corrections. My goals were two fold; utilize my degree in social work and defray the expense of a Master's degree. My job consisted of educating adolescent males during group and individual therapy sessions concerning the negative impact of illicit drug use. Additionally, I performed home visits and worked to promote effective crisis management skills.
Family Case Worker
In the years preceeding and during my collegiate studies I served as a Family Case Worker for Mississippi Action for Progress, Inc. Job duties consisted of recruitment, registering and enrolling preschool age children into the Head Start program; conducting home visits; taking children to medical and dental appointments; maintaining comprehensive social services and health records; developing family and community partnerships; serving as a community liaison between families and community entities; fundraising; compiling monthly programmatic reports and conducting parent meetings. In charge of supervising staff and children for transportation, daily activities and adhering to policy and procedures.
