Laboratory Research AssistantUniversity Of California, Santa Cruz Apr 2016 - Nov 2016A contract research assistant position with Principal Investigators Jen Maresh and Lisa Schwarz at the Long Marine Lab, with Dan Costa's supervision. In addition to the research (detailed below), this position also included lab manager functions, including scheduling office hours, tracking and scheduling equipment use, and supply maintenance. This experiment was designed to understand the metabolic needs of grey whales and elephant seals, and how their diet and foraging patterns would likely change as their prey migrated in response to rising ocean temperatures due to climate change. Alongside one other research laboratory technician, I precisely homogenized and freeze dried a variety of collected prey samples, then weighed, measured, and pressed homogenate into 1 gram pellets. I then measured the average caloric value of these samples using a bomb calorimeter. Using this data, I used the average calories per gram to determine the caloric value of each prey type. This data was used to predict how many individuals of each species a grey whale or elephant seal would need to eat to meet their daily metabolic needs, which was used to predict how their predation behavior might change as migration patterns change. -
