About Daphne Van Brunschot-Wiersma

Hi, my name is Daphne Wiersma, and for the past two and a half years I’ve been living in the United States of America. During this time, I worked as an assistant scientist at Javelin Biotech, a start-up company consisting of a team of scientists from the Translational Center of Tissue Chip Technologies (TC2T) at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Working in a small team allowed me to learn from my fellow scientists easily, about various aspects of tissue engineering and hardware design. With organ-on-a-chip technologies and computational modeling, I think we’re making great progress to reduce the use of animals. I’m passionate about creating and learning new techniques and technologies to further aid this cause. Therefore, I’m excited to put my expertise to good use at my new job.

I developed a framework to explain the normal development of the caudal neural tube and have shown how changes in this pathway can lead to adverse developmental outcomes, such as spina bifida and craniorachischisis. Since this was a literary research I didn't develop more lab skills. However, I improved greatly in text scanning and translating and combining various researches into a schematic pathway. Show less

The 3D model was exposed to chemicals often used in PD studies. When fully developed the model could also be used to study other diseases or neurotoxicity of other chemicals. In the future, induced pluripotent stem cells could be generated from patients to develop a personalized 3D model for treatment studies.During this internship I developed my skills regarding 3D cell cultures, gene expression and cell viability assays, and confocal microscopy.Published in Altex, August, 2017'A human brain microphysiological system derived from induced pluripotent stem cells to study neurological diseases and toxicity'David Pamies e.a. 2017Published in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, September, 2018'Rotenone exerts developmental neurotoxicity in a human brain spheroid model'David Pamies e.a. 2018 Show less
