The stakes are high when it comes to guiding students towards academic success and ultimately their career choices. As the academic advisor for the first 30 hours of their education, Daphney finds creative ways to guide students on her caseload through their academic goals. She is particularly careful with course selections for students ensuring that they are on the correct path for their desired interests. She teaches "New Student Experience" for first year students. The course goals are to familiarize students with being a college student, Valencia College, and the journey towards their career. Daphney enjoys creating impactful lesson plans, to help further the students' education and the college's goals in education.

Greater New York City Area

Enlisted with the popular New York City employment discrimination law firm because of her previous work at Harry Fox with copyright music publishing, Daphney represented employees in litigation, streamlined the caseload, and strengthened client communications. She conducted client intake, drafted complaints; EEOC charges and mediation statements; pre-trial motions, and dispositive motions. She supervised activities of 4 per diems and 1 receptionist, and managed discovery for over 60, and then 120 cases. Critical to the caseload, Daphney interviewed clients to prepare discovery resquests and responses. She played a key role on the legal team, meeting critical time lines for court appearances and discovery process. Her role as Associate Attorney opened her eyes about what the US courts considered discriminatory behavior in the workplace.

Daphney was hired by the large New York City law firm to serve in the temporary role of assisting with electronic discovery for an anti-trust case. She reviewed thousands of documents for a small music performance rights organization being sued by several (10-12) large television corporations. Her role was to discover discrepancies in the opposing parties' discovery, in advance of depositions.

Using her experience at the Community Economic Development Clinic, Daphney joined the non-profit legal services arm of the university and received a fellowship to research diversity within the legal profession. Learning the challenges that Diversity Directors faced within their respective industries was both the most exciting and challenging aspect of her experience as an intern. As an intern, she analyzed statistics regarding law schools, law firms and the legal education applicant pool. She interviewed diversity personnel within law firms and universities to identify their most pressing issues.

As an intern, Daphney conducted legal research and drafted presentations on corporate law issues, including business formation for client-organizations. She also researched New York's non-profit law and developed materials to advise clients on business structures often communicating effectively with non-English speakers via a translator and support materials. Navigating the language barriers between herself and clients provided its own opportunities, which, in turn, required Daphney to find creative ways to educate clients on corporate law.

Initially hired to negotiate contracts and respond to inquiries regarding copyright infringements for music-licensing agent, Daphney was subsequently tasked with researching and interpreting new federal copyright regulations. While working at The Harry Fox Agency, she worked on legal compliance for the Grammy's. For the first time in her experience as an intern, Daphney was also able to advise international business clients.

At Kenneth Cole Productions, Daphney conducted legal research and drafted memoranda on various issues including New York’s employee choice doctrine and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. She negotiated and analyzed advertising agreements with fashion publications, and drafted release agreements and tenant estoppel certificates. Daphney monitored standards in contract law across the 50 states and was responsible for a counterfeit raid, confiscating illegal Kenneth Cole merchandise.

Working in the Family Advocacy Clinic at Fordham excited Daphney. She was responsible for researching and discovering answers to legal questions that would greatly impact clients. The legal issues of clients were quite personal and their cases were often grave and serious, so Daphney approached each case with great care. She conducted legal research and drafted memoranda on various issues including educational placement of disabled children in out of state facilities. She prepared exhibits and other supporting materials for hearings before the Department of Education’s Impartial Hearing Office. In many cases, Daphney also communicated with government agencies on the behalf of her clients regarding their rights and requested aid.

Daphney's experience interning at Mercedes-Benz USA, was quite interesting. She learned a great deal about trademark infringement. While handling lemon law claims was not particularly difficult, she found them to certainly be surprising and unpredictable. As an intern, Daphney drafted cease and desist letters regarding trademark infringement. She also compiled and analyzed marketing materials and other documents in response to discovery request.

As a product intern at Macy's Merchandising Group, Daphney maximized new Product Assistant’s effectiveness by providing training and creating quick reference sheets. She compiled the data she acquired during her research into meaningful information in order to prepare for market. As a Charter Club Ready-to-Wear unit member, which had direct accountability for communicating with overseas vendors, she created purchase orders for sweaters, tracking ad samples, and prepping storyboards for market presentations. During this internship Daphney learned business quickly and organized practices without direct supervision. She also conducted in-store grassroots research to determine cause for sluggish sales of Charter Club Cashmere.

After completing her sophomore year at Howard, Daphney worked as a Marketing intern at Nike, Inc. It was during this summer internship that Daphney began to find her voice as a leader, particularly during team meetings. Her roles as an intern included: doing on the ground market research, testing workouts, and attending local sporting events.
