She is everything an excellent Executive Director needs to be, caring and passionate about making lasting change for children, an amazing fundraiser, a caring manager, networker and innovator who is able to make decisions that will ensure a healthy and growing organization. Dara saved Operation Jumpstart, a small non-profit, from going under in 2004, and over her 7 year tenure the organization grew and developed meaningful programs. I was also able to be a mentor in the organization and I saw Dara help my young mentee and her family for five years- transforming sisters who were at-risk into high achievers in top colleges with large scholarships, or on their way. Before I got directly involved with Operation Jumpstart I sat on a United Way committee with Dara in 2004, and saw her policy advocacy skills first hand. She helped create a movement for education reform in Long Beach, a city that greatly misses and needs her smart ideas and far-reaching action. I am deeply grateful for the guidance and sound advice she has offered me on everything from maintaining a stable budget, to fundraising to management, and I remain impressed and in awe of all she has done to improve lives of youth in California, the staff who have served admiringly under her and the board members who have had the privilege to watch her implement lasting change."
