If this extra milk production is to be produced profitability at farm level then the vast majority needs to be produced from grazed grass. It is estimated that approximately 30% of the milk produced in Ireland is from poorly drained lowland mineral soils (heavy soils). As a result, soil drainage is an important method by which farmers can improve the productivity of their land with the objective being the removal of excess water from the soil, resulting in an improvement in trafficability and the development of a favourable root zone for plant growth. A pre-requisite for any successful drainage programme will be the accurate identification of the particular drainage problem prevailing, the design and the installation of an appropriate drainage system. The objective of the proposed project is to characterise a range of land drainage systems installed on a range of poorly drained soils types in Ireland. All sites will be intensively equipped with watertable level and water flow metering equipment, as well as a meteorological data recording station. Water balances will be established by measuring meteorological data (rainfall, wind speed, temperature and evapotranspiration), drain discharge rates and watertable response during various rainfall events. Surface soil conditions will be monitored to establish the effect of the drainage systems on land accessibility and grazing conditions. Herbage yield will also be measured. Water samples will be collected from drain outflows and groundwater wells to establish nutrient, dissolved organic carbon and dissolved gas losses and fluxes. These parameters will allow a full evaluation of the benefits accruing to the landowners after artificial drainage systems are installed and will also facilitate a full nutrient balance to facilitate a better understanding of the soil fertility regime Show less

Legislation governing the application of biosolids to land does not consider the relationship between biosolids application rates and surface runoff of nutrients, suspended sediment, pathogens, emerging contaminants (EC), or metals; nor do they consider the dose-response relationship between associated hazards and human health. The aims of this study are to: (1) examine, under controlled conditions in the laboratory and field, the impact of the landspreading of biosolids (on grassland) on surface runoff/subsurface drainage/shallow groundwater of nutrients, solids, metals, pathogens and an EC (either natural toxins, veterinary medicine, or hormones arising from animals) (2) model and conduct a risk assessment of potential hazards of human health concern.
