Head Of Cyber Regulatory Policy

Westminster, London, United Kingdom

As smart devices are becoming increasingly common within our homes, government and industry must work to ensure that internet-connected products have cyber security built in by default ("secure by design") to help protect people’s privacy and online safety.I worked within the Secure by Design team which has been heralded as one of the most successful initiatives of the UK's National Cyber Security Programme and, as a result, the UK Government are recognised as thought leaders among European and global stakeholders in the IoT (i.e. smart devices) cyber security space. My role involved:- Overall responsibility for developing and implementing world leading UK cyber security legislation.- Establishing the UK Government’s policy position on cyber security by design through a multitude of policy interventions (e.g. Code of Practice for IoT Security). - Leading a motivated team of senior policy advisors, analysts, lawyers and technical experts to deliver high quality work within ambitious time frames.More information on the work that I have been involved in, and what the wider team does, can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/secure-by-design

Senior Policy Advisor, Consumer Protection

Westminster, London, United Kingdom

Consumers are central to the UK economy as their choices about what they spend on goodsand services drives innovation and competition. UK consumers currently benefit from competitive markets which not only deliver better quality goods and services but also greater choice and innovative products and services. The UK has one of the world’s strongest consumer protection regimes to ensure consumers’ interests are safeguarded in our economy, with recently modernised and comprehensive basic rights, strong advocates for consumer interests and well-developed advice services. The policy area that I worked in primarily focused on the important aspect of consumers being able to get redress when things go wrong by ensuring their consumer rights are effectively enforced at both the national and local level. This was a senior policy role with the purpose of reviewing the UK Government's policy position on the enforcement of existing UK consumer protection legislation and, in turn, develop new innovative and value for money policy initiatives to benefit UK consumers. Part of my role was also to manage the government's funded sponsorship relationships with National Trading Standards (who enforce consumer protection legislation at a national level in England and Wales) and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (who enforce consumer protection legislation within Scotland).
