  • Addio Pizzo
    Consultant, Crime And Sociology
    Addio Pizzo Sep 2010 - Apr 2011
    Palermo, Italy
The literal translation of 'Addio Pizzo' is “say goodbye to paying protection money” a Sicilian based organisation It is a grass roots civil society organisation promoting counter crime activities to benefit society, specifically the fight against the protection racket and the mafia in Sicily. AddioPizzo and AddioPizzo Travel are currently one of the key Anti-Mafia organisations still operating in Sicily today. Working alongside other anti mafia agencies they are promoting change and growth for their society. They are developing old-fashioned social perceptions and encouraging behavioural change toward the Sicilian mafia and its outdated methods of extorting protection money from businesses in Palermo, Sicily's Capital. My role as a consultant was to offer an English perception and translation service to increase the scope of the organisation and appeal to a wider English speaking audience, especialy to universities in the UK. Collecting Qualitative date by conducting interviews and research activities into the regions society, to facilitate an understanding of the issues of the mafia phenomenon, and how perceptions in Palermo are developing. There is clear evidence that the citizens of Palermo have had enough of the mafia, and there is support for the ideals of ethical consumerism and ethical tourism which is an encouraging growing trend. There is much work still to do with almost 80% of the shops and business in Palermo still paying protection money to the mafia, its influence is still very strong in Palermo.I represented AddioPizzo at the European Parliament in Brussels at the conference on ‘Organised Crime, Corruption and Illegal Economies: Confiscation and Social Reuse as a European Countermeasure’, and as AddioPizzo's Delegate for its interests with ‘Freedom Legality And Rights in Europe’ (FLARE).

  • Aquabox
    Consultant
    Aquabox May 2008 - Oct 2008
    Uk, Lebanon, Sierra Leone
Multi-agency, real-time monitoring and evaluation of humanitarian responses in post conflict communities and refugee camps in Lebanon & Sierra Leone. I was responsible for monitoring and evaluation, and logistic organisational responsibility (in Sierra Leone) for the humanitarian aid sent by Aquabox. The main aim was to oversee the distribution of a water filtration system and humanitarian aid enclosed within a seventy five litre plastic box. I oversaw the delivery to several vulnerable community groups including:a) Palestinian Refugee camps to the north of Lebanonb) Several community groups and refugees in Freetown and Kenema in Sierra LeoneAdditionally, an evaluation had to be made to establish whether the humanitarian aid and the filtration system were fit for purpose, and to evaluate the international agencies that cooperated and assisted in the distribution. Finally I compiled a report and delivered a presentation on my findings to the Aquabox Management and Trustees. My role in Sierra Leone was a dynamic one, having to be alert at all times, ensuring that the base of operations and accommodations were secure and that finances and equipment were kept secure. Also, I often had to resort to reactive management skills as we travelled the country to different and unfamiliar areas. Sometimes it was difficult to gain accurate up to date maps etc of the area, so liaising with locals and developing friendships was a key activity especially where the security risk had not been fully assessed. It was important whilst collecting information that being discreet and culturally aware of sometimes sensitive areas and people, and often negotiating for information were important task undertaken whilst in West Africa. I maintain a dynamic approach to such tentative situations. My time in Africa taught me that in order to suit several parties it is often wiser to retreat than force an issue when it was not always possible to reach an agreement.
