My research use an emerging model system, the snail Crepidula fornicata, to investigate the underlying genetic basis of shell shape using molecular biology, a diverse set of microscopy techniques, and morphometrics. Part of my work is tests the role of a signaling molecule in determining shell coiling, which may underly a prominent pattern in the fossil record: the repeated, independent evolution of non-coiled shells from coiled ancestors.
