About Dareen Akkad
What the Crust was launched in April 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, with my husband and partner Ahmed Helmy. Our Cairo-based bootstrapped startup specialized in making Authentic Neapolitan Pizza, and within a few months, we became Africa's First and Only AVPN-Affiliate Pizzeria. Since then, and in under two years of operation, we have managed to receive global recognition fuelled entirely by organic growth. We had challenged ourselves to succeed in creating awareness of our brand without ever spending any money on advertising or marketing (not even a single sponsored post). We have been able to use our extensive experience in branding to guide our communication. The results have been better than anything we had anticipated. In 2021, we were awarded World's 10 Best Neapolitan Pizza Outside Italy and Top in Africa by 50 Top Pizza, the ultimate guide for Italy and the World's best pizzerias. Their inspections are carried anonymously and secretly, through which they reported that "one would be hard pressed to find a better pizza on the entire continent." The following year, in 2022, we became a globally-ranked pizzeria, one of the world's 100 Best by the same organization, and awarded a special "Pioneer in Field" prize for our efforts in spreading Neapolitan pizza tradition in Africa and the Middle East. Since then, we have received numerous accolades and mentions in some of the world's best food guides, including World's 50 Best Discovery (Best in Cairo), Food and Wine (Top 10 in the world), and Il Gusto by La Republicca (Top 10 in the world). As What the Crust's Head Pizza Chef, I am honoured and humbled by these recognitions, and I am always on the lookout for the next challenge.
