Do not be hesitant to take calculated risks to bring about change and create opportunities to do so.One example: While I embrace technology and it's amazing advancements, sometimes something so simple as sending a hand-written note of thanks to a client or mentor - it can be a powerful example of dedication to doing the right thing. "Appreciation" is a concept that brings value that you cannot tie to a balance sheet. I learned this long ago when I received a personal note from Jack Welch, at the time, the CEO of General Electric.A client of mine had written to him a note of thanks for something I had done to help save a relationship with his own client.Jack sent a handwritten note back to the client with a copy to me, in his typical direct and minimalist writing style: "Thank you for writing about Darin, you were good to do it..." and later "sometimes the boss needs to know..."It's something I'll never forget. A lesson that you can have tremendous impact on others by simply extending yourself just a little bit more than might be expected or even necessary.Because of that simple gesture of appreciation, I learned to strive to model that lesson often, at work and also in my personal life.
