I manage all new Janos designed product efforts. Working with the sales team, and customers directly, we seek opportunities leverage Janos strengths seeking a competitive advantage over our competition. Stock products are also my responsibility. With a Zemax course under my belt and a great deal of support from our optical designer Dr. Ben Masella. I have been able to designed a couple of new catalog lenses for the new 640x480 12micron arrays, these prototypes were displayed in our booth at Photonics West 2015 (and DSS 2015). It has been a great experience and is making me an even better opto-mechanical engineer. I also have been doing a little consulting on the side. While at Stingray I’ve have a chance to get back into engineering; largest accomplishment was my first TMA it is quite a large ”beast” with a primary/tertiary mirror that encompasses a <22 inch diameter. Of course this wasn’t my only challenge. I also had the opportunity to design and build an Offner relay that operates at cryogenic temperatures, much simpler then the TMA but a nice project to accomplish just prior to it. Of particular interest was a test lens that operates from the UV into the MWIR the materials and coatings alone made it a changing project. On the remote use side, I designed and built a small MWIR continuous zoom lens, and a rather large dual FOV, which was made interesting by having to design a shutter in front of in excess of 120mm. The mechanical design of optical assemblies is what keeps my interest strong in the industry. I have designed the mechanical portion of many infrared systems such as; large refractive collimators, cryogenic refractive systems, long focal length objectives, catadioptric objectives, multiple field of view, and a continuous zooms objectives. While managing the design engineering team we implemented many design, assembly, and alignment techniques that today allow us to meet the some of the most demanding performances in the industry. Most recently I have been able to help the engineering team design some militarily hardened IR objectives; it has been a great learning experience. I strive to learn as much as I can about how infrared technology is used and how the company I work for can assist in making new products that change the way we solve the problems of the future.
