I worked remotely for this Atlassian Platinum Solutions Provider as a Senior Systems Engineer in the Managed Services department supporting Linux-based customer-facing instances of various Atlassian products, setting up new instances (using Puppet), and doing other administrative and technical tasks. I also completed the Atlassian Jira Administrator training. The position was fully remote and my co-workers were in Toronto, Canada, and London, England. While I was an excellent technical fit for this role, the fact that the rest of my team was 8 hours ahead of me made synchronous daily work difficult at the time. When I was offered the next role, which was local, I accepted.

I took some time off for personal growth. My main success was that I created and pursued a custom exercise program which measurably improved my physical health. I spent some time learning more about DevOps culture and practices, as well as reading more of the CCNA study material. I also pursued my hobby of amateur radio; I repaired radio equipment, created a web-based wide-band radio receiving system using a Raspberry Pi and multiple software-defined radios, and assembled and erected multiple antenna systems.

At this small colocation/hosting/ISP business, I was responsible for dozens of systems running FreeBSD Unix, Linux, and Windows Server 2003. This included installing, configuring, and maintaining new and existing servers. I supported server software such as Apache, Sendmail, and MySQL. To improve reliability, I created a monitoring solution for all in-house servers and external devices using Nagios and Cacti. I administered the office's Windows-based network, including permissions and VPN connections. Many of my duties required work in a small data center. Due to personal reasons, I left this position and moved back to the Denver area.

At this small SaaS company, I was responsible for dozens of systems running FreeBSD Unix which ran the company's hosted software. This included installation, configuration, and maintenance of new and existing servers. Originally starting as an external contractor, I converted to a full-time Dell employee after 6 months. I worked in a very large support organization as part of a smaller team, supporting Optiplex desktop and Latitude laptop hardware via phone and email. These machines ran Windows 95, 98, 2000, and XP, and were in environments ranging from homes to Fortune 100 businesses. In the support department of over 300 technicians, I was regularly in the top 20 for adherence to performance metrics, and I received multiple letters of appreciation from both customers and my immediate manager. I was laid off when a large portion of Dell's support organization was outsourced.

In one of the more interesting positions I've had, I assisted in the creation of a small hosting and colocation facility from scratch. We started with an empty office. I planned the network, rack layouts, cabling, power requirements, cooling, and hardware needs. Once the small facility was basically equipped, I also installed, configured, and maintained network hardware such as Cisco routers and switches, Linux and Windows-based servers, and customer hardware. I performed systems administration needs, as well as maintained external services such as our corporate web presence and e-mail services. Unfortunately, being a small startup caused some cash flow issues; I left due to pay irregularities.

In this position, I worked with TV set-top hardware with integrated Internet access and web browsers which were slated to be deployed into large hotels and other hospitality environments. I created the power-on user interface, and I tested various set-top hardware against our developed pages as well as against other standards. I was laid off when the company ceased operations; my manager hired me and I followed him to assist in starting a new business: Sprocket Data.
