Darin is the Executive Director of the $180m iLAuNCH Trailblazer, led by the University of Southern Queensland in collaboration with the Australian National University and the University of South Australia, sponsored by the Department of Education, and partnered with more than 20 space related companies across Australia. The $180m iLAuNCH consortium will help build Australia’s sovereign space capability by addressing critical gaps and accelerating the development of a space launch manufacturing sector comprising commercially viable rockets, rocket test and launch facilities, rapid satellite manufacturing, communication technologies, and integrated sensing systems through industry research, commercialisation, manufacturing, and workforce development. Darin’s last job as Director Space for the South Australian Space Industry Centre (SASIC) saw him formulate and execute the State’s space strategy to build an enduring space industry for South Australia. Prior to that he managed the virtual warfare lab for Boeing PhantomWorks (International), aiming to disrupt Boeing’s traditional product lines with systems 10 times better/cheaper/or faster, including the autonomous aircraft ‘Ghost Bat’. He is a military veteran of more than 25-years, working on operations, strategy, and capability development for the Air and Space domains. His space experience includes: Executive Director iLAuNCH, Director Space for the South Australian Space Industry Centre, Chief of Australia’s Space Operations Centre (AUSSpOC), Chief of Strategy to the US Executive Agent for Space within the Pentagon, and staff officer in Australia’s joint Defence Space Coordinating Office. His broader experience includes: Lecturer in International & Political Studies, space operations and policy, weapons flight test and evaluation, flying anti-submarine and surveillance operations (East Timor, Iraq, and International Coalition against Terror), nine years abroad embedded with coalition partners, and large-scale transformation projects such as space operations, $1.5B AP-3C upgrade, $300m P-8 cooperative program, $500m stand-off weapon, and $150m Triton cooperative program.Darin holds Masters’ degrees in: Philosophy, Arts, and Science; and a Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace). He is a graduate of the US Air Force’s School of Advanced Air & Space Studies (SAASS), Canadian Forces Aerospace Systems Course (ASC), the International Space University (SSP10), Australian Command and Staff Course (ACSC), and the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).
