The devs worked in independent, cross-functional missions to deliver improvements and extensions to the existing product. I moved quickly on arriving to establish relationships with my team and to understand how they currently worked. I provided daily support to answer questions or give guidance on technical and process best practice and to support them with their work where I could. I also held fortnightly one to ones to dedicate time to each team member to discuss how they were doing and any concerns they had.In April I guided my permanent team members through setting their objectives for the upcoming financial year. I discussed their current experience and where they hoped to develop over the coming months and also consulted with the Development Manager to agree what the overall objectives for the team should be. I also performed performance reviews for them in September. I assessed their progress towards completing their objectives and identified both areas of strength and places to improve in the coming objective period. The Mobile Web product was a React Redux single-page application integrated with several web api backends. Other key technologies and tools we were using included Storybook, Typescript, NPM, CSS in JSS, Jest and Git. The application was deployed on a custom AWS stack managed using Team City. Working with other leads and members of QA I introduced new testing and deployment processes to improve the existing testing cycle.During my time with the company I was also a member of the EU Conversion mission. I made use of my experience with Scrum by helping guide the team with scrum ceremonies, and working closely with the Product Owner to manage the backlog. Show less

I was managing a team of two other Front End Developers and reporting to the Digital team’s Programme Manager and GNL’s Digital Director. Notable projects I worked on included commercialising rich article templates for BBC campaigns such as The Disruptors. We also worked on new commercial templates and designed an enhanced, Progressive Web App version of the features websites which went live in 2019.In March 2018 I attended an Innovation Summit at BBC Worldwide's offices in New York. Together with several of my colleagues, bringing together editorial, product and technical knowledge, we surveyed the landscape of digital technology today and discussed ways cutting edge tech could be used to create innovative user experiences. Our R&D focussed on four subject categories which are attractive to our potential sponsorship clients, Travel, Finance, Automotive and Business to Business. At the end of the summit, over forty ideas had been generated. I and three of my colleagues formed a splinter group which rationalised these ideas. From the initial set, we created a set of 16 ideas and determined the technologies which would be used to deliver them. By identifying common themes, we were able to create a portfolio of five white-labelled product specifications, fully costed, which could produce all of these editorial projects. Initial presentations were positive. Show less

Notable day-to-day projects included migrating our analytics solution from Omniture to Comscore and building tools for our commercial teams to create advertorial content for third party clients. I also started taking on team management responsibilities including project planning and recruitment. My most significant project in this role was my work on Sir David Attenborough’s Story of Life. SoL is a multi platform application for users to explore videos from across Sir David Attenborough’s career to celebrate his 90th birthday:http://www.bbc.com/earth/storyoflifehttps://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/attenborough-story-of-life/id1124476992?mt=8https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.bbc.storyoflifeMy work on this project brought together everything I had learned about project management, web and app development to date. I was involved in the entire project lifecycle from design and specification through to delivery. I contributed to the technical specification of the project, identifying the components which would be required for each platform.During development I was working closely with several BBC teams and third parties to build modules which de-risked key features of the apps including video playback and publishing content to the apps in a lightweight, cacheable manner. I also wrote scripts for processing subtitles and making them available to both the apps and web products. Story of Life went live in November 2016 and had been downloaded by half a million users by March 2017. The app was nominated for a BAFTA award in Digital Creativity. Show less

BBC Features are a group of websites covering a broad range of topics including science, culture, travel and business which are funded by advertising outside the UK. These include:http://www.bbc.com/futurehttp://www.bbc.com/culturehttp://www.bbc.com/capitalhttp://www.bbc.com/travelhttp://www.bbc.com/earth/worldDuring my first project in the features team I contributed to the development and release of BBC Earth. I was able to make use of previous knowledge gained working with web video to create webpages which integrated HTML5 video into the layout of the page on devices which could support it. An example of this layout is available here on desktop devices:http://www.bbc.com/earth/columns/a-colourful-lifeWhen I joined, the features websites were built on an ageing framework based on Zend PHP. We undertook a large project to migrate the websites to a new framework built in house called Glaze. Glaze is based on NodeJS and Express. It implements an MVVM design pattern which integrates with a backend api providing editorial content and processes it for display in server and client side rendered modules in the UI. During this project I gained significant experience building scalable web applications as well as following a project plan which migrated the websites in a controlled manner. I was also able to gain devops experience by helping out with releases. In addition to my main projects, my day to day role included testing and preparing advertorials built by third party clients and providing support to our editorial teams. Show less

I joined SyQic following an internship at their main office in Kuala Lumpur. The internship was part of a recruitment drive aimed at building a development team at the newly opened UK branch of the company based in Gerrards Cross.I worked as part of a small multi-national team situated in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and the UK. I learned a great deal about the IPTV industry and several of the technologies used for delivering live and VoD content to consumers. I also had the opportunity to make a key contribution to the design and construction of a brand new, large scale IPTV product called Yoonic 2.0. Yoonic was made up of several systems integrated using web services. As is the nature of working in a small team, I contributed to several components across the entire architecture as required to bring the project to fruition. As well as making full use of the knowledge I gained during my degree, this gave me an opportunity to exercise initiative by extending my knowledge of several technologies I was unfamiliar with. The role also required that I manage my time effectively in order to deliver projects on schedule while providing day-to-day tech and system support to personnel in the UK office. Show less
