I have worked as an economist in the Civil Service since October 2019 across two government departments. Prior to joining the Civil Service, I obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in economics, with the highest grade in my master’s cohort. I have a particular interest in applying econometric and statistical methods to extract meaning from data, then communicating these economic findings to a number of audiences. I have utilised my economic and statistical skills to assess the impact on the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy with regards to its effect on the labour market and different industries. As part of my role as an economist, I must ensure that my economic findings are written in a non-technical manner for the public to easily understand. I have also presented to many different audiences and as such I realise the import of tailoring presentations to the audience’s requirements.Much of my work involves data analysis, so I use statistical software to create outputs that I can explain through an economic lens. The majority of my work has used STATA and Excel for econometrics, but I am incorporating SQL and R into my workflow. I have helped less experienced colleague to analyse data using STATA and Excel, while learning actively learning SQL and R. I work with other government departments to ensure that policymakers have the best information possible. I must also engage with external stakeholders who can assist with analysis, and also provide valuable data sources. Managing relationships both internally and externally is vitally important so that the businesses’ reputation is maintained.
