I volunteered at Sólás as part of the MSc Placement Module at Queen’s. At Sólás I was typically ‘paired’ with one particular child each week; supervising, interacting and managing their needs, whilst supporting the other volunteers. I acquired various techniques to manage a range of challenging behaviours and meltdown behaviours. I gathered familiarity with non-verbal communication (i.e. using picture exchange systems, Makaton, slowed speech and using basic commands) as well as sensory play. Also, I cultivated the opportunity to work with children from a range of ages (i.e. primary school and early years), backgrounds, genders and additional needs including ASD, ADHD and SLD.

Belfast, Forestside Shopping Centre

I worked at Warehouse for almost 5 years. Being my first job experience, I accumulated a lot of social and customer service skills. As part of my role as a part time sales advisor my key responsibilities included working as part of a team to communicate effectively with customers and colleagues to facilitate sales and a positive shopping experience. I was able to advance my ability and recognise the importance of adapting to the needs of differing customer profiles. I demonstrated a lot of flexibility and commitment at Warehouse by picking up extra hours and covering shifts for colleagues. I moved up to a temporary supervisor role to assist with under-staffing, managing a small group of my colleagues to lock up, complete banking and prepare the store for the next morning. This role introduced me to a number of new responsibilities which accompany a leadership role.

Belfast, Shankhill Road

This work experience was part of a placement module at Queen's University Belfast. My duties here included providing 1:1 pupil support within GlenWood PS' Key Stage 2 Learning Support Unit. Other responsibilities included break and lunch time duties, marking, taking reading groups, accompanying children in the sensory room and engaging with psychological language tests such as the Renfrew Language Scales and GL Baseline Assessments. From this experience I not only learnt how to manage a range of challenging behaviours and support a range of special educational needs such as autism, ADHD and cerebral palsy, but I was able to apply the psychological theory I have learnt to the classroom.
