I started out at the bottom of the department and quickly went to being the only (surviving downsizings) sysadmin, network admin, desktop support, hardware procurement, PCI compliance, Postgres DBA, and the security guy for the company for several years. I am responsible for over 800 Linux systems distributed between a main office and two data centers connected by 10 gig fiber. The bulk of these systems are managed by Puppet and are deployed using Cobbler, python and bash scripts. I installed and maintain our clustered storage volumes totaling over 9 petabytes using a mixture of Gluster and Lustre file systems. The storage is spread across over 80 nodes in 8 volumes with the largest volume weighing in at over 3 petabytes of Gluster based storage used for web facing customer photos and videos. Customer facing apps run on Apache Tomcats and are fronted by NGINX or Apache. Customer media is served up using a combo of proprietary Apache video streaming software and caching Trafficservers. The database is running on a Postgres cluster.Our Amazon presence that I maintain includes AWS services like EC2, ELB, Route 53, AMI imaging, VPC, S3, Glacier, RDS, and IAM roles. I use AWS and 3rd party tools like awscli, s3cmd, and s3fs to help make everything go.

I was the company’s “Linux guy”. My primary responsibilities included designing systems to meet DOD requirements for our Army contract, post-sales support, and taking over critical support issues that were jeopardizing large contracted sales. My proudest moment at the company was designing, building, and delivering a Solaris based system for General Motors to be used to render hydrogen fuel cells. At that time, the now mild sounding 128GB of RAM system was rare and cost over $14K – just for the memory. Hydrogen fuel cell turned out to be a flop, so it rarely got used for its intended purpose. Instead, system did end up being heavily used by the GM’s Pontiac division to render upcoming models.
