About Darrell Newton, Ph.D.

Before coming to Shippensburg University, Dr. Darrell Newton served as Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Winona State University. Prior to this, he worked as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies at UW-Eau Claire. He was also an Associate Dean for the School of Liberal Arts, and the Department Chair for the Communication Arts program at Salisbury University, Maryland. Dr. Newton has been teaching since 1991 in the disciplines of Communication, Media, and Cultural Studies, along with English, Creative Writing. His research interests include policy studies of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the effects of postwar immigration upon programming. Efforts also include current constructs of race in contemporary television programming. Dr. Newton received his Ph.D. and a second M.A. in Communication Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His first M.A. in English and his undergrad degree in Mass Communication came from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has also previously taught at Salisbury University, UW-Whitewater, UW-Madison, and the Milwaukee and Madison Technical Colleges. Other administrative experiences include serving as a resident hall director with UW-Platteville, working as a graduate assistant for UW System’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, and serving as an advisor and recruiter for UW-Milwaukee’s School of Allied Health. He also worked for the Department of Special Programs and Human Resources at Milwaukee Public School System. Newton also worked in corporate telecommunication management for Illinois Bell telephone, Avon Corporate offices, and Hyatt Regency Hotel system.
