Founding engineer (first hire of the Founders) - Vidora was acquired by mParticle Aug 2022- Sole DevOps engineer supporting the product as we scaled out to multiple frontends, auto-scaling job processing backends, large spark-based ML clusters (1000s of nodes), and hundreds of various projects over the years.- Scaled out an initially-monolithic rails app into multiple micro-services written in Ruby & Python- Wrote Chef-based configuration management and deployment for all infrastructure- Managed all AWS infrastructure (EC2, S3, VPC, Route53, IAM, EMR, SQS, Athena, CloudFront), with most of it under Terraform / Packer for Infrastructure-as-Code.- Global load-balancing via Route53 to multiple regions, regional load-balancing with HAProxy to dozens of frontend servers spread out over multiple availability zones, handling 25M+ requests/day- Maintained at least 4 9's of high-availability for end-user APIs; multiple layers of caching & failover to handle various backend failures.- Built out and managed multi-master MySQL cluster w/ multiple read-only replicas for scalability- Built out and managed self-hosted Cassandra clusters for large-scale data storage- Built out and managed self-hosted Redis + Sentinel for localized caching of app stacks- Built out and managed ElasticStack cluster (ElasticSearch, Kibana, APM, Beats, FluentD as transport) for centralized logging and application monitoring- Built out Sensu-based monitoring and alerting system- On-call, first-reponder and troubleshooter for most production issues- Worked through multiple security audits and SOC2 preparedness projects- Managed self-hosted Gitlab server as our code repository, with continuous integration & delivery (CI/CD)

First full-time operational hire for Ooyala. Architected, implemented, and maintained a highly-available, high-traffic web service, from a small handful of virtual EC2 servers, to a globally distributed, highly available, very high traffic online video platform.Responsibilities have included, at various stages of our constant growth:- scaled the site from a small handful of servers in a single location to many orders-of-magnitude larger across several remote regions- wrote and performed frequent application-stack deployments, using Capistrano and in-house developed systems- worked with all development teams to transition their built-and-tested-on-a-laptop service into a production-ready, highly-available service- implemented and managed various monitoring systems: primarily Nagios, but also Zabbix, in-house tools, and external health-check systems- first responder for production incidents- built and maintained system-level images for all servers, primarily Ubuntu Linux (but also Red Hat)- implemented customized configuration management using Chef (and a little Puppet before that)- involved in many new-service architectural planning sessions to advise on appropriate technologies, failure scenarios to handle, and large-scale considerations- developed and managed our video ingestion service to handle high-traffic video uploads via a variety of methods (WebDAV, HTTP POST, FTP, Aspera, MRSS pull-based systems)- implemented and managed several caching layers, from CDN edge and mid-tier configurations, HTTP caching proxies, and app-specific content caches (many technologies, but mostly Akamai CDN, Varnish, and Redis)- mentored and transferred most of these responsibilites to peers as we scaled the organization- transitioned our monolithic Subversion repository of all code into dozens of manageable Git repos

Built the website from the ground up, including evaluating and acquiring hardware, writing in-memory stock feed databases and APIs, system administration, database administration, and front-end design and coding.Used many technologies throughout the 9 years, including C, Perl, Java, HTML, SQL (DB2 & MySQL).Personally managed up to eight employees, and was involved in all architectural design decisions, as the company grew to 150+ employees overall (40+ in the Calgary development office).
