We facilitate the development, assessment and implementation of effective collaborations within and between the pharmaceutical, educational, medical, community-based and research communities. Our expertise lies in working with stakeholders from various sectors to:- identify institutional assets- develop new programs, including internships and collaborative research- create effective and innovative curricula- evaluate and implement best practices- project management- budget and portfolio construction- staff mentoring and recruiting- grant writing.

Through this collaboration with Dr. Vineet Gupta, we seek to discover novel anti-inflammatory drugs, specifically targeted at treating renal rejection and cancer metathesis, and to determine the cellular pathways by which these drugs function. We are currently investigating signal transduction pathways in human and mouse macrophages and various cell lines by monitoring the activation of phosphorylated proteins in cells. We are developing a novel method for photo-crosslinking proteins that associate with the cytosolic portion of Mac-1 integrin. Finally, we seek to identify the putative drug binding site using site directed mutagenesis and x-ray crystallography.

As a professor of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry at a liberal arts college, I have been able to thrive as a Teacher-Scholar. I strive to mentor students in developing the ability to think and problem solve by studying complex scientific problems, by understanding experimentation and analyzing data, and by striving to think outside of the box. Through my drug discovery and translational medical research, which has always involved undergraduate students, we use modern biochemical instrumentation and techniques to understand and improve health. Through advising, I have been able to encourage students to follow future pursuits toward graduate or professional school or to find jobs, but more importantly, I have been able to help them understand who they are as a person and a life-long learner. Through faculty governance, I have engaged the campus in discussions and programs surrounding on-line education, research and scholarship, effective pedagogy, K-12 partnerships and curricular reform.

As the inaugural coordinator, I was charged with creating a program that recruits, retains, mentors, educates and excites students to become global citizens, responsible leaders and advocates for health care, and to pursue advanced degrees in the health sciences. Our efforts focused on:(1) recruiting students; (2) developing and assessing learning experiences (mentoring programs, living-learning communities, internships, service learning, invited speakers, and international trips); (3) educating students on medical issues (ethics, race and gender, access, and public policy); (4) developing an on-line portfolio to help track student activities and success; (5) researching appropriate Allied Health Science programs to be added to the college, and (6) managing staff, a budget and raising funds from external and internal sources.

As a professor at one of the most ethnically diverse liberal arts colleges, I had the opportunity to work with students in small classes and in one-on-one mentoring relationships, guiding them in their course work, individual research and the career paths that they have chosen. I engaged in scholarship involving undergraduate students, in service to the academic community and department, and in advising of students.

A variety of techniques including Nucleotide Analog Interference and Suppression Mapping, Photocrosslinking, transcription and PCR were utilized to investigate the tertiary structure of catalytic RNA. Through this research, I expanded my chemical knowledge by investigating a biochemical problem. The research activities of several Yale undergraduates were being directed as part of an undergraduate research program. Responsibilities include training of individuals for effective research in organic chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, day-to-day guidance on the progress and direction of interdisciplinary research projects, supervision during experimentation and overall mentorship for students in lab.
