I started in the Refrigeration Industry in 2004 as an Apprentice Service Engineer.Working alongside some really supportive mentors and on a wide variety of refrigeration equipment over the years I began to develop into a skilled troubleshooter and this aspect of being a refrigeration engineer is by far my favourite. Although it could be inconvenient, I thrived off those late evenings in front of a machine that’s not operating correctly, under pressure, troubleshooting and trying to diagnose and resolve the issue. The appreciation received from customers for sticking with it and getting to the bottom of it, would make it all worthwhile. It is this preference that led me into Process Cooling.In Process Cooling the operation of the chilled water system is vital to the customer’s production facility, contributing in this area has always been where I felt most job satisfaction.In 2022 I decided to make a career move from Service Engineer into System Design and Sales.Although I’m off the tools, troubleshooting and problem solving is still at the core of what I do, just from a different angle these days.Instead of solving the problem on the piece of kit in front of me, it’s about finding a solution at a system level, sometimes right from the start with a new facility, other times as part of an upgrade or expansion.The technical solutions to be found are different depending on the application.Along with technical solutions, there are the commercial solutions to consider as well, they can be based around;o Energy efficiency, resulting in lower CO2 footprint and lower energy costs. o Return on investment time frame. o The ability to expand a system in a modular approach as the production expands.o Redundancy, ensuring sufficient back up in the event of a failure in order to keep production running.o Ease of maintenance and longevity of plantSo, although I miss my troubleshooting days on the tools, I’m doing much the same in my new role, helping to solve problems for the customer.
