CGIS' core business is enabling small municipal governments across Canada to benefit from GIS technology in a low-cost and highly effective way. Since 2007, Darren has been an instrumental part in the growth of the company from 17 customers to 99 customers, with a corresponding growth in profits. A large part of this growth was facilitated by Darren's introduction of open source GIS tools (QGIS, GRASS, GDAL/OGR) into everyday company work flows.At CGIS, Darren's experience ranges from assessing client needs, to researching appropriate solutions, to providing options at various price-points, and finally, to implementing the client-chosen solution in a web-based GIS environment. This position gave Darren valuable experience in user training and ongoing support, both technical and sales related. Having performed all of the above duties in a remote position for clients across Canada, Darren can comfortably meet the needs of clients regardless of location.

Darren was responsible for creating and maintaining a geodatabase of their wetland projects. In this position, Darren also designed and performed the analytic methodology for a project to measure wetland conversion (i.e. loss) in Southern Ontario. Results of this important analysis were later used to develop the wetlands indicator in the State of Ontario’s Biodiversity 2010 report.
