As the Technical Manager of Database Development for the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), I oversaw all R&D related aspects of the database subsystems (Oracle) within BIS-E, the consumer/prosumer/SMB email solution that today services over 40 million users worldwide. My technical responsibilities included analysis, design, development, production deployment (with data/schema migration), data analysis, and incident-related production support. My managerial responsibilities included recruitment, coaching and mentoring, performance management, cross-training within/across groups, and resource allocation/forecasting. I also participated in various product-related status/checkpoint and "roadmap" discussions.

As the Senior (Lead) Database Developer/Analyst, I was responsible for all aspects of the database subsystems within the Email division of the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). Responsibilities spanned the full spectrum, including analysis, design, development, production deployment (with data/schema migration), data analysis, and 24x7 production support/administration. As the lead of the database development team, I was also involved in acquiring new talent through recruitment, on-boarding new hires, establishing and enforcing standards, delegating tasks to team members, and providing feedback on their performance.

As the Senior Database Analyst (with responsibilities in both development and operations), I was responsible for all aspects of the database, including analysis, design, implementation, deployment, data analysis and administration. Initially, the focus of the company was to develop a "groupware" web portal for shared email, calendar and documents, but quickly evolved into a web service platform for email aggregation, and was deployed as a mobile handset email solution. I managed all development, test, and production databases, including replication between primary and warm standby databases. I was responsible for the interface definition and development of all stored procedures, which were used extensively throughout the system. I implemented a data warehouse (using SQL Server 2000), which included defining fact and dimension tables, writing data extraction, cleansing and loading scripts, and providing end user support. I used Perl as a primary scripting language (not simply a job launcher), and to a much lesser extent, assisted with Java development as well.

As the Principal Systems Architect in the IT department, I was responsible for the enterprise-wide information architecture, including data modeling, database development and administration, and systems integration, to provide a unified view of the enterprise information. The primary components of the enterprise system included a customer relationship management system (Pivotal Relationship), an order entry and accounting package (Great Plains Dynamics C/S+), and an internally developed application used to generate and store quotes for customers. I ported the internal app from Access to Active Server Pages (client-side scripting in JavaScript, server-side scripting in VBScript), making extensive use of stored procedures on the SQL Server (7.0). I also developed product maintenance tools used to manage the configuration utility's supporting product database.

As a Senior Database Programmer/Analyst in the IT & System Services division, I was primarily involved in an internal project developed for the Financial Services division that calculated commissions and bonuses for the company's sales force. I was involved in revamping a legacy system that used MSAccess 97 for the UI, with MS SQL Server 6.5 on the back end. I used stored procedures to define a clean interface to the database, with all database access going through DAO (then subsequently RDO), and designed and developed various forms on top of the db layer, which made use of ActiveX components and drag-and-drop functionality. As an analyst, I worked alongside business analysts, gathering requirements, and proposing recommendations as needed to ensure that business objectives were met.

As a Senior Database Programmer/Analyst/Administrator, I worked on the second of three phases of an in-house project that had a UI written in Visual Basic (v5), with Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 as the DBMS. My main responsibility was to provide database expertise, primarily through the design and development of stored procedures, which were responsible for most of the information processing processes in the system. In addition, I assisted UI developers by defining clear interfaces between the client and server, and in some cases, redesigning the UI in order to achieve higher performance. I was also involved in the administration of the database servers, which included creating, dumping and loading databases, performing database consistency checks, troubleshooting, and other related administrative duties.

As a Professional Services Consultant, I provided technical consulting expertise to a myriad of companies, ranging from single-day engagements to medium-term projects lasting months at a time. Among the clients were industry leaders such as PeopleSoft, E*Trade, and AT&T Wireless. At PeopleSoft, I performed tasks ranging from installation and administration to troubleshooting database inconsistencies. In addition, I created a CGI-based tool that allowed administrators to monitor the status of several Sybase SQL Servers from any browser. Most of the short-term engagements involved assisting customers with capacity planning, enhancing performance, and resolving database inconsistencies and corruption.

Initially as a Database Developer/Analyst - and then advancing to Senior Database Developer/Analyst - I was responsible for overseeing all analysis, business and technical design, implementation, unit testing, customer support, and maintenance of the database subsystem of the GMS (Gas Management System), the company's flagship product. Typical tasks included performing critical business and technical analysis through design meetings; providing feasibility assessments and cost-benefit decisions; ER-modeling; physical database design; enforcing business rules and referential integrity; designing and implementing complex logic in the form of stored procedures; handling the conversion of database structures and customer data between releases; and tuning the database for optimal performance.

As the Teaching Assistant for a 3rd year course in "Comparative Programming Languages" that dealt with the differences between various classes of programming languages (i.e. declarative, imperative, functional, object-oriented, 4GL) and proper design methodologies for each, I was responsible for tutoring students, as well as grading assignments and exams.
